Sometimes, a visit from a superhero is the best medicine.

These superheroes also APD SWAT members in disguise, rappelled down the side of Children’s Hospital Colorado yesterday.

It’s a moment we’ve cherished year after year, and one the patients have come to cherish, too.

And it’s not just about the smiles. This is training for us, too. Good practice for those moments that may call for rappelling in real life, when a real superhero is needed.

A wave, a smile and a morale boost are what we shared today, but safety in our city and for these kiddos is what we strive to accomplish every day.

It was truly an honor.

Aurora Man Arrested in Nonfatal Shooting Following Hit-and-Run Crash

The Aurora Police Department Gun Violence Suppression Team announced an arrest has been made in its investigation into a road rage shooting following a hit-and-run crash Monday in northwest Aurora.

Titus Patterson, 30, of Aurora, was arrested by Aurora patrol officers on charges of attempted second-degree murder and attempted first-degree assault.

The charges stem from 6:02 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, when Aurora police officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash near Dayton Street and East 13th Avenue. The Aurora911 caller said there was a collision involving an E-Moto bike and a gray SUV. The driver of the SUV left the scene before responding officers arrived. An E-Moto is an electric bicycle that isn't allowed on streets or sidewalks.

After the crash, a second E-Moto rider, later identified as Patterson, pursued the SUV while armed with a handgun. Patterson fired several rounds at the driver of the SUV near East 6th Avenue and Fulton Street. The driver was not struck by gunfire.

After the shooting, Patterson continued west on East 6th Avenue and crashed near East Lowry Boulevard and Yosemite Street in Denver. Patterson ran from the scene of the crash.

During the on-scene investigations, patrol officers developed information Patterson was the shooter and that he resided in the 1300 block of Dayton Street, near the scene of the initial hit-and-run crash. Officers responded to Patterson’s home, where he was taken into custody.

Aurora patrol officers searching the area later found the gray SUV near East 7th Avenue and Alton Street in Denver and contacted the driver. The circumstances of the initial crash remain under investigation.

The rider who was struck in the hit-and-run was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Denver Teen Arrested in Aurora Nonfatal Shooting

Aurora Police arrested a 14-year-old Denver boy Saturday following a shooting at Sand Creek Park that left a man injured.

Officers responded to the park around 1:51 a.m. and provided immediate medical aid to the victim, including applying a tourniquet that a doctor later said saved his life.

Investigators determined shots were fired from a red pickup toward a group in the park. Using license plate readers and surveillance cameras, officers located the truck about two hours later and recovered a fi***rm.

Several minutes after the truck was stopped, the 14-year-old approached an officer at the original scene and admitted to the shooting.

He was arrested on charges including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.

Just after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026 the Aurora Police Department responded to a large gathering of approximately 500 young people, primarily between the ages of 14 and 17, at a local shopping center. The gathering appears to have been organized through social media around an unpermitted sporting event.

What may have started as a social gathering quickly became a significant public safety issue as the crowd grew. Participants entered nearby roadways and smaller groups broke away and entered surrounding businesses.

Officers responded initially to maintain safety and address the growing crowd. As officers attempted to manage the gathering, groups entered nearby businesses, including a restaurant and a grocery store. While some simply ran through the businesses, others vandalized property and stole merchandise.

As the behavior escalated, the Aurora Police Department declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and ordered the crowd to disperse.

More than 70 Aurora police personnel ultimately responded to the incident and remained in the area for several hours to restore order and protect the surrounding community and businesses. The size of the response required the department to redirect a significant number of on-duty resources that otherwise would have been available to respond to calls for service throughout Aurora.

“This crossed the line from a gathering of young people into a police matter because of the behavior and criminal conduct of some of those involved,” said Chief Todd Chamberlain. “We will not tolerate groups taking over roadways, disrupting businesses, damaging property or stealing under the belief that being part of a large crowd provides anonymity. It does not.”

Investigators are reviewing available videos and other evidence to identify individuals responsible for criminal activity.

“We also need parents and guardians to understand the role they play,” Chamberlain added. “Know where your children are, who they are with and what they are being invited to through social media. When hundreds of young people suddenly gather and behavior begins to escalate, the consequences can become serious very quickly. Police officers should not have to be pulled away from other community emergencies to manage behavior that could have been prevented.

“The overwhelming majority of young people in our community make good decisions every day. But a crowd can create a false sense of anonymity and encourage individuals to make decisions they might never make on their own. If you commit a crime in a crowd, you should expect us to use every tool that we have available to work to identify you and hold you accountable.”

The investigation remains active, and APD is asking businesses and community members who have video or information that could assist investigators to contact Denver Metro CrimeStoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.

Today, we pause to honor and remember Sergeant Eric Scherr, who died in the line of duty on August 30, 2021.

Five years later, Sgt. Scherr’s absence is still deeply felt by the family, friends, colleagues, and community whose lives he touched. His 25 years of service reflected a lasting commitment to protecting others and serving his community.

A version of the blessing scam has made its way to Aurora and the metro area, and we are reaching out to educate our community to help prevent residents from becoming victims by sharing ways to stay alert. The blessing scam traditionally involves a distraction and jewelry-swap theft, in which offenders use a purported gift, blessing, or piece of jewelry to distract victims while stealing the genuine jewelry they are already wearing. In our recent cases, the following has occurred:

• Offenders approach the victim, often in a friendly or helpful manner… or seeking assistance of some kind from the victim.
• They may offer the victim a “gift,” blessing, or piece of jewelry.
• The offender may physically place the fake jewelry on the victim, such as around their neck, wrist, or hand.
• While the victim is distracted by the gift, conversation, or physical contact, the offender secretly removes the victim’s genuine jewelry.
• The victim leaves, believing they have received a gift, only later to discover that their valuable jewelry has been replaced with inexpensive or worthless costume jewelry.

Important: Victims do not voluntarily surrender their jewelry for a blessing. Instead, offenders use a fake gift or blessing as a distraction while secretly removing jewelry the victim is already wearing.

This scam primarily targets senior and foreign-language-speaking communities, but anyone can be victimized by this swindle.

Protect yourself: Do not allow a stranger to place jewelry or other items on you, and be cautious of unsolicited gifts, blessings, or physical contact from strangers.

Aurora Police Warns Businesses, Seeks Public Help about Prolific Shoplifters

(Aug. 26, 2026) – The Aurora Police Department is warning local businesses and asking for the community’s help with information about five prolific shoplifters involved in 139 known criminal incidents amounting to over $60,000 in stolen merchandise from Aurora businesses.

“These are not crimes of opportunity. These are not people down on their luck trying to feed their families. These are organized, deliberate acts by prolific, repeat offenders who have made a pattern of stealing from our local businesses,” said Aurora police Chief Todd Chamberlain. “When five people are responsible for 139 crimes and more than $60,000 in stolen merchandise, the impact extends far beyond the businesses they target. These crimes affect employees, customers and our entire community.”

The most prolific suspect of the five is Christina Lynn Zamarron, 46, of Denver, who has been arrested by the Aurora Police Department 16 times since 2007 and has numerous misdemeanor and felony level convictions going back to 2021 for theft, narcotics possession and assault.

Zamarron is a suspect in 48 shoplifting incidents in Aurora dating to October 2022 targeting beauty supply, home improvement, clothing, grocery and home goods stores, amounting to $16,242 in stolen merchandise. Zamarron also is suspected of running a fencing operation in which she receives “shopping lists” from her “customers,” steals those items and then sells them at a discount while pocketing her ill-gotten gains for profit.

Zamarron was most recently arrested by Aurora police on Aug. 15 on charges of theft and larceny, as well as active warrants out of Greenwood Village for shoplifting and Arapahoe County for possession of narcotics equipment. She has since been released from custody.

Christina Diane Rico, 51, of Aurora, currently has five active Aurora police warrants for numerous theft charges, second-degree burglary and false reporting to police. She is a suspect in 35 shoplifting incidents dating to June 2024 targeting book, clothing and beauty supply stores, totaling $7,556 in stolen merchandise.

Arrested seven times in Aurora since 2014, Rico’s prior convictions include escape from parole in 2017 following a 2014 conviction for obstructing an Aurora police officer.

Demonte Rodgers-Jenkins, 23, of Aurora, is wanted on an active Aurora police warrant on charges of theft of $5,000-$20,000 and attempted theft of $2,000 to $5,000. Rodgers-Jenkins is a suspect in 16 shoplifting incidents dating to December 2025 targeting big box stores, amounting to $23,401 in stolen merchandise. Rodgers-Jenkins has had no prior contacts with Aurora police and no prior convictions in Colorado.

Christopher Mondragon, 31, of Aurora, has an active Aurora police warrant for theft of $5,000 to $20,000. Mondragon is a suspect in 15 shoplifting incidents this year targeting clothing and home improvement stores, totaling $7,507 in stolen merchandise.

Mondragon has been arrested twice by Aurora police since the beginning of last year, with two prior convictions for obstructing Aurora police officers.

Manuel Castanuela, 34, of Aurora, is currently wanted on three Aurora police warrants for numerous theft and obstruction charges. He is a suspect in 25 shoplifting incidents dating to October 2024 targeting clothing, home improvement and grocery stores, amounting to $8,638 in stolen merchandise.

Arrested seven times by Aurora police since 2021, Castanuela has two prior convictions for theft and narcotics possession.

“These suspects have clearly established patterns of offending, repeatedly victimizing our local businesses and continuing to commit crimes despite previous arrests and convictions. We are committed to breaking that cycle,” said Chief Todd Chamberlain. “Protecting our businesses is just as important as protecting our residents, and we will continue working with our business community to identify prolific offenders and hold them accountable to make Aurora a safer place to live, work and do business.

“In a time when brick and mortar businesses struggle to stay open, tens of thousands of dollars in losses can make a difference between a business thriving in our community or a businessowner’s livelihood being cut out from beneath them.”

Detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who has information about the above suspects, where they are located and any additional information about criminal activity.

A man has been arrested in connection with a home invasion robbery over the weekend.

At 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, Aurora Police Department officers responded to the 900 block of Ouray Street for a report of an armed home invasion robbery.

The victim told officers he was entertaining friends at his home in the early morning hours. At 5:20 a.m., shortly after his friends left, an adult male armed with a handgun entered the residence, ordered the victim to lay down, and bound his wrists behind his back. The suspect reportedly took several valuables, including fi***rms.

Further investigation identified John Cutlip, 63, as a person of interest in the case. Cutlip was contacted near his home in the 300 block of East Colfax Avenue in Bennett. Cutlip was arrested and booked in to the Aurora Municipal Detention Center on the charges of aggravated robbery, first-degree burglary and menacing.
