The Association of Professional Police Officers (APPO) has represented the police officers / investigators of the Aurora police department for decades. This is the first time we have ever had to offer a hiring incentive. Unfortunately the morale of the officers at APD has never been lower. The officers do not enjoy any public support from the administration, and have been without a contract since January of 2020. Instead of working with the union to resolve the contract or to craft a successful lateral program, the administration, through their bargaining agent, chose to lie and say there were going to be no financial incentives offered to lateral hires. The culture of divisiveness within the department is causing officers to leave at unprecedented rates and we have also seen officers who have lateraled over end up returning to their original agency. If you want to solve the recruitment crisis you should take care of your current employees. Offering strangers $20,000.00 while simultaneously not taking care of those who are already putting in the work will not solve anything.
