The severe weather that moved through our area brought heavy rainfall, high winds, and flash flooding to many roadways and low-lying areas. While the storm has passed, it’s important to remember how quickly conditions can become dangerous.

Flash floods can occur with little warning, turning familiar roads into life-threatening hazards in a matter of minutes.

🚨 Remember:
• Never drive through flooded roadways.
• Turn around and find an alternate route if water covers the road.
• Avoid walking through floodwaters, as debris, strong currents, and hidden hazards may be present.
• Stay alert for downed trees, power lines, and damaged roadways following severe weather.
• Continue to monitor weather alerts during future storms.

We are grateful for the efforts of all emergency responders, utility crews, road departments, and community members who helped keep others safe during the storm.

Your safety is our priority. When severe weather strikes, the best decision is often to stay put, stay informed, and never underestimate the power of moving water.

As temperatures continue to rise, it’s important to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. Every year, excessive heat leads to medical emergencies that can often be prevented with a few simple precautions.

Know the signs of heat-related illness:
🔹 Heat Exhaustion
• Heavy sweating
• Weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness or headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Cool, pale, clammy skin

🔹 Heat Stroke (A Medical Emergency)
• High body temperature
• Altered mental status or confusion
• Hot, red skin
• Loss of consciousness
• Seizures

Tips to stay safe in the heat:
💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
👕 Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
🌳 Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
☀️ Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day when possible.
🧴 Use sunscreen and wear a hat when outdoors.
👶 Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle.
👥 Check on family members, neighbors, and friends who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

If you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Move them to a cooler area and begin cooling measures while waiting for emergency responders.

A little preparation can go a long way in preventing a heat-related emergency. Stay hydrated, stay cool, and stay safe this summer!

Aurora EMS would like to congratulate Bill Wooderson and Aidan Plogmann on successfully earning their Advanced EMT (AEMT) certifications!

Becoming an Advanced EMT requires additional education, training, and clinical experience beyond the EMT level. AEMTs are able to provide an expanded level of prehospital care, including advanced airway management, administering a wider range of medications, starting intravenous (IV) lines, and providing additional treatments during medical emergencies.

This achievement reflects Bill and Aidan’s dedication to continuing their education and enhancing the care we provide to our community. Their commitment to professional growth helps Aurora EMS improve patient outcomes and ensures our residents receive the highest level of care possible when they need it most.

Yesterday, Aurora EMS had the opportunity to partner with the Dillsboro Police Department to visit the first graders at Dillsboro Elementary School for a fun and educational bike safety program! 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️

Students learned the importance of bike safety, including wearing helmets, following traffic rules, and staying aware while riding. Teaching these habits at a young age helps keep our community’s children safe while having fun outdoors.

To wrap up the event, two lucky students were surprised with brand new bicycles! Seeing the excitement on their faces made the day even more special.

Aurora EMS would like to thank Dillsboro Police Department and Dillsboro Elementary School for helping make this event possible. We love opportunities to connect with our community and help promote safety for the next generation! 💙

In EMS, no one works alone.

Every emergency response depends on teamwork — from dispatchers answering the call, to first responders arriving on scene, to EMS crews providing care, and hospital staff continuing treatment. Each person plays an important role in improving patient outcomes.
