𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲’𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝟯𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 – The Department of the Secretary of State announced the results for a recount for Maine Senate District 30 Democrat (Gorham and part of Scarborough):

✅Warren, Sophia Bailey – 3,838
Sato, Eleanor Y. – 3,807

Representative Ellie Sato of Gorham requested a recount after Representative Sophia Warren of Scarborough was declared the winner with a 29-vote margin. District 30 is currently represented by Senator Stacy Brenner, who did not seek reelection.

Two additional recounts, for House District 49 Republican and House District 135 Democrat, are scheduled for this Thursday. Recounts are open to the public and media and are livestreamed on the Secretary of State’s YouTube page.

𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Maine statute Title 21-A, §737-A lays out a specific plan, process and any related costs for votes to be recounted. In a recount, representatives of each candidate and staff members from the Department of the Secretary of State manually review each paper ballot to determine the official vote tally:

𝗜𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀: any candidate other than the apparent winner who desires a recount must file with the Secretary of State a written request for a recount within five business days after the election.

𝗜𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀: only a candidate who received one of the top three rankings at the end of the penultimate round of ranked‑choice counting may request a recount, and they must file with the Secretary of State a written request within five business days after results are announced.

Official results must be presented to the governor within 20 days of the election (Monday, June 29) and will be posted on the Election Results page.

Senate District 30 consists of Gorham & part of Scarborough. On Election Night, the two candidates were separated by 29 votes.

Even the most mundane records can convey the pulse of the times.

On a routine court form, the clerk of the York County Court of Common Pleas edited the opening statement for the case file of Nathaniel Staple vs James Coffin (MSA ID: 40-39796-F018) by crossing out George the Third and the King’s titles. In their place are the words, “The Government and People of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay.”

The interesting part is the date the paperwork was signed: June 19th, 1776 - two months after the battles of Lexington and Concord - and two weeks BEFORE the Declaration was signed.

𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘅 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳: Secretary of State Shenna Bellows issued a decision regarding a challenge to the nomination petitions filed by Albert Joy as a non-party candidate for Knox County Sheriff. Secretary Bellows has rejected the challenge, finding Mr. Joy eligible for the November ballot.

The Secretary of State’s Office received the written challenge from Daniel Landers alleging that Mr. Joy did not meet the statutory qualifications for the office of sheriff pursuant to Maine law. A hearing was held on Thursday, June 11 with Chief Deputy Secretary Katherine McBrien serving as the Presiding Officer at the hearing, and Assistant Attorney General Jon Bolton assisting as legal counsel. The Secretary, upon review of the proceedings and evidence, the recommendation of the hearing officer and responses from Mr. Landers and Mr. Joy, found that the challenger did not meet the burden of proof required to disqualify Mr. Joy from the ballot. Mr. Joy will appear on the ballot in November for Knox County Sheriff as a nonparty candidate. The challenger may appeal the decision to Superior Court.

It has been a long day, but the Elections staff is down to reconciling the results from the last 2 towns! Thorough & meticulous prep work is essential to produce accurate results & tomorrow everything will be proofed to ensure data from all 487 of ’s voting districts is recorded accurately!

Elections staff (& local media) continue their work to ensure all votes cast in ’s 487 municipalities are counted & accounted for before ranked choice tabulations are run. The staff will continue work into the evening with an expected conclusion Thursday.
