Post 205 Jack C. Fortune is named in honor of the great American Captain Jack Cranston Fortune. Captain Fortune was killed in action on 11 September 1944 in service to our great country in world war II. Jack Cranston Fortune was born in Augusta, GA. on September 2, 1944. He attended Houghton Grammar School and the Academy of Richmond County, graduating from the Academy in 1935. He went on to the Junior College of Augusta. He was employed by the Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust company. He enjoyed Softball and Tennis. He entered Military service in June 1941 as a flying cadet. He attended pre-flight training at Maxwell Air-force Base, Montgomery, Alabama He attended primary flight training in Douglas, Georgia. He attended basic flight training in Greenville, Mississippi He graduated as a second Lieutenant, Air-Force reserve. He instructed basic flight at Gunter Field, Montgomery, Alabama: P-39 at Fort Myers, Florida, P-47 at Venice Army Base, Florida. He went overseas in June 1944 and was assigned to the 79th Fighter Group, 86th Squadron based in Corsica. Later he was moved to southern France. September 11, 1944 Captain Jack Cranston Fortune paid the ultimate sacrifice for this nation and our freedom. He was killed in action. Jack’s Mother, Mrs. Nell Crosby Fortune, resided 1151 south federal highway, Pompano, Florida. His sister, Mrs. William Scan and one brother were living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has two brothers living in Augusta, Georgia: Crosby Fortune, and Jack’s identical twin, Charles. Charles’ oldest son is named Jack Cranston Fortune.
