We are BACK for another round of Battle of the Badges! This time, we are duking it out against the Augusta Maine Fire-Rescue in the ultimate rib-eating contest hosted by Texas Roadhouse! We are a couple of weeks out from the 4th of July, but here is the schedule of events for 2026! Please expect traffic and detours throughout the day as events take place throughout the city.

July 4th, 2026 Event Schedule

Annual Parade - 10:00AM
Theme: America’s Birthday - 250 Years! Starting at the State House parking lot, around Memorial Circle, down Rines Hill through Water Street and across the Calumet Bridge to end at Old Fort Western.

Old Fort Western Annual Festivities - 11:30AM
Reading of the Declaration of Independence by Mayor O’Brien, followed by a traditional feu de joie (musket salute) by Old Fort Western staff. Enjoy the Fort’s “Old Time 4th” celebration with historic games, horse wagon rides, and the Downeast Brass Band from 1:00–2:00 PM. Grab lunch at the Fort’s hotdog fundraiser and visit displays from Lithgow Library’s 130th Anniversary, and the Koussinoc and Fort Halifax Chapters of the DAR.

Family Fun at Mill Park - 1:00PM
Bounce houses, games, bubbles, magic show, food trucks, and more!

Mill Park Celebration - 4:30PM
Live music (Duke Dog and Shizzle) & food trucks.

Firework Display - 9:05PM
The best viewing of the fireworks will be from Mill Park - 1 Northern Ave, Augusta, ME.

Work is underway on the Water Street Pedestrian Safety Project, with construction being performed by Scully Construction.

This project focuses on the installation of curb extensions (bump-outs) which will shorten the crossing distance and increase visibility for pedestrians.

As part of this project, southbound traffic on Water Street will be detoured to Commercial Street and will allow for northbound traffic to travel on Water Street between Winthrop Street and Bridge Street on Saturday, June 13th. The closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of drainage infrastructure. There may be intermittent stoppages of traffic in order to facilitate the work, and if conditions become unsafe to keep northbound traffic open, a full closure and detour will be implemented. The contractor is hopeful to complete the work on Saturday, but work may carry into Sunday if needed. All properties will be accessible during this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. The remaining work is anticipated to have minimal impacts to traffic.

Don’t fret if you get an extra piece of paper if you are pulled over for a traffic infraction by an Augusta PD officer!

Augusta PD, along with the Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Committee, has created these cards to promote safety for all road users and to share more about the initiatives they are implementing. Officers will hand these out during traffic stops to provide additional education and safety tips. Lt. Blodgett and Officers, Johnson, Gibson and Guptill spent some time at the MGMC Early Learning Center yesterday during their community workers week. The preschoolers got to see some cool things and had some great questions. They were huge fans of the police motorcycle. Thanks for having us!!

We are looking for any information on where this sheep belongs or who owns it. He/she has been spotted wandering on the east side of the Kennebec in the area of Cony St and Stone St. If you have any information on this sheep, please call us at 207-626-2370.

After a distinguished career starting on October 6, 1998, with Augusta PD, Lieutenant Jason Cote is retiring, leaving behind a legacy defined not only by his investigative expertise and leadership, but also by the friendships and professional relationships he fostered throughout the years. Lt. Cote had a unique ability to bring people together, earning the trust and respect of colleagues, partner agencies, and members of the community alike. His willingness to listen, mentor, and support others created lasting bonds that extended far beyond the workplace. Those who had the privilege of working alongside him will remember his steady guidance, sense of humor, and genuine care for the people around him. While his retirement marks the end of an outstanding career in law enforcement, the friendships he cultivated and the positive impact he made on those around him will continue to be felt for many years to come. Lt. Cote we wish you well in your retirement and have no doubt you will excel in the next chapter of your life.

To quote Lt. Cote, “Put them on safe and let them hang”

Just a heads up for tomorrow, 6/5/26 in the downtown area of Augusta. The parade will leave Cony High School at a confirmed time of 6:30pm.

Traffic Advisory: Cony High School Senior Parade

Join the City of Augusta in congratulating the Cony High School Class of 2026!

The Cony High School Senior Parade will take place tomorrow, June 5th, beginning at 6:30 PM, departing from Cony High School, located at 60 Pierce Drive.

The parade route will travel:
• West on Cony Street
• Through Cony Circle
• Across Memorial Bridge
• Through Memorial Circle
• South on Water Street
• East onto Cony Street
• Through Cony Circle and back to Cony High School

The parade will be escorted by the Augusta Police Department to help ensure the safety of participants and spectators. Motorists should expect brief traffic delays along the route and are encouraged to use caution, follow officer directions, and plan accordingly!
