On August 10, 1776, the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Georgia took place in Savannah. Archibald Bulloch, president of Georgia's provincial council, read the document to the citizens. This was more than a month after George Walton, Lyman Hall, and Button Gwinnett voted for the final text of the document and just over a week after the Georgia delegates put their signatures the engrossed copy of the historic document on August 2.

We offer our deepest appreciation to those who volunteered their time and talents to make the day such a success!
Augusta lawyer Carlton Powers portrayed our own George Walton with a moving reading of the Declaration of Independence -- and followed up by signing the ball for the first pitch by Woodrow Wilson at the GreenJackets game. Special thanks to the Liberty Hill Chapter, NSDAR and the Suwanee Creek Chapter, NSDAR. Each chapter brought wonderful children's activities. The Skunk Brigade brought the cannons, the Garden City Strummers and the Sweet Adelines brought the music, blacksmith Barry Myers brought his craft, and everyone brought their patriotic spirit to Celebrate 250 Years of History!

250 Years ago today, in Philadelphia, George Walton delivered a letter from Archibald Bulloch to John Adams. Adam's response to Bulloch is more famous as he writes:
"This Morning is assigned for the greatest Debate of all. A Declaration that these Colonies are free and independent States ... May Heaven prosper, the new born Republic,—and make it more glorious than any former Republic has been."

250 Years ago, George Walton was likely just arriving in Philadelphia. Major Walton had an assignment to recruit troops for Georgia as he traveled to Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress.
In a letter to then Colonel Lachlan McIntosh on June 17, 1776, George reports on his progress. He is in Williamsburg, Virginia and has visited the Convention of the Colony ‘to apply for leave to recruit men for any service.’ George was granted permission to recruit 300 men from Virginia for Georgia’s First Battalion. He tells Col. McIntosh that he will leave with fresh horses and should be in Philadelphia in 7 or 8 days.

Every day, I welcome guests to Meadow Garden and tell them a story founded in the best scholarship that we can do.
