The annual observance at the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was held this morning, bringing together law enforcement officers from across the state to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to Maine.

This year, one name was added to the Memorial: Perley C. Kennie of the Westbrook Police Department. Officer Kennie died on August 11, 1966, after suffering a heart attack while on duty as he carried a pregnant woman into the emergency room at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Today’s tragic news that a member of the Maine Warden Service has died in a plane crash weighs heavily on all of us. Our hearts are with the warden’s family, the Warden Service and Maine’s entire law enforcement community. It is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every day in service to others.
