Breezy southwest winds, paired with dry conditions and expected near record high temperatures will lead to elevated fire weather conditions Today, especially over portions of western and southern Iowa. Please avoid burning of any kind, as any fire starts are more susceptible to spread rapidly and become uncontrollable in these conditions

03/16/2026

Hard surface roads are partially covered and slick this morning. Gravel roads have small drifts and snow laying in areas sheltered from the wind. Blowing snow in isolated areas is reducing visability. Plows are coming out at 6 a.m. and graders at 7:30. Drive safe.

🚩 RED FLAG FIRE WARNING 🚩

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for our area due to critical fire weather conditions.

Strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation are creating an increased risk for rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior. Any outdoor burning or spark-producing activity could quickly become dangerous and spread out of control.

During this warning:

Do NOT burn debris or conduct outdoor burning

Avoid using equipment that may produce sparks

Properly dispose of ci******es

Secure trailer chains to prevent roadway sparks

Report smoke or fire immediately by calling 911

We strongly urge all residents to exercise extreme caution. Fire departments are on alert, and conditions may change rapidly.

From Audubon County Engineer & Secondary Roads Department:
Here is a look at what we are expecting tonight and into tomorrow. When the snow tapers off the winds are forecast to pick up which will reduce visibility and make travel difficult. The plan as of right now is as follows. Plows will not be out on hard surface roads until Saturday at a time yet to be determined based on snowfall and wind. Graders will not go out on gravel roads until the wind stops blowing snow which could be as late as Monday morning. We will monitor this system as it moves through and react as quickly as possible once we are able to.
