The "DeKalb United Fund for You" raised $49,195 during their first campaign and with those dollars were able to help support nine agencies. One founder of the United Way was Ms. Barbara S. It was through her spirit and determination that we have grown to the successful organization that we are today. Today, the United Way of DeKalb County is able to help fund multiple agencies and programs within DeKalb County through our ALICE and Community Impact grants. The United Way of DeKalb County is also a member of United Way Worldwide and Indiana United Ways.

ALICE isn't someone "out there."

ALICE is the teacher's aide.
The cashier.
The childcare worker.
The nursing assistant.
The manufacturing employee.
The neighbor down the street.
Or maybe even You.

The newest State of ALICE report shows that 24% of DeKalb County households were ALICE in 2024—working, earning, and contributing to our community, yet still struggling to afford the basics.

When combined with households living in poverty, 34% of DeKalb County households were below the ALICE Threshold.

Because financial hardship doesn't always look the way people expect.

The latest State of ALICE data paints a clearer picture of what many families in DeKalb County are experiencing every day.

The cost of basic necessities—including housing, childcare, food, transportation, healthcare, and technology—has continued to rise, placing increasing pressure on working households.

ALICE households are working hard, earning above the Federal Poverty Level, and contributing to our community. Yet many still struggle to afford the basics.

Behind the numbers are real people making difficult choices:

💊 Healthcare or other essentials

The ALICE data helps us better understand these challenges and guides our work to bring people and resources together to create lasting local change.

Food insecurity remains a reality for many individuals and families across DeKalb County.

For households already balancing difficult choices between housing, childcare, transportation, healthcare, and groceries, access to nutritious food can make all the difference.

That's why collaboration matters.

Today, members of the Hunger Relief Alliance of DeKalb County will gather to continue strengthening local hunger relief efforts, supporting food pantries and meal programs, identifying service gaps, and ensuring resources are reaching those who need them most.
