State Health Officials Announce Season’s Seventh Human Case of West Nile Virus in Massachusetts

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) today is releasing updated West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance and case numbers for the week, including the state’s seventh human case of WNV this year in a man in his 60s exposed in Worcester County.

As a result of this case and increased WNV activity this season, risk levels for WNV were elevated to moderate in most of the state. Only Dukes and Nantucket counties, as well as Provincetown and Truro in Barnstable County remain at low risk. Risk levels remain high in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Newton, Revere, Somerville, Watertown, and Winthrop.

“Mosquitoes remain active, and West Nile virus continues to spread,” said Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein, MD, PhD. “Because some risk will continue until the first hard frost, I want to encourage everyone to keep using mosquito repellent and take other protective measures, such as wearing long sleeves and pants to reduce exposed skin when spending time outdoors.”

Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project personnel will be in your community to respond to residents’ concerns about mosquitoes in their area on the following dates in September: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th

All dates are subject to change due to weather conditions, mosquito populations, mosquito virus activity and/or special event spraying. This program will shut down when cool night time temperatures become predominant in the area. a detailed notice about the spray schedule is posted on the CMMCP phone system after 3:30 PM each day and it is also on: http://www.cmmcp.org, click the “2026 Spray Schedule” button on the right.

Twenty five years later, we remember September 11, 2001. A day that changed our nation forever. We would like to take a moment to honor the 2,977 lives taken, the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, members of our military, ordinary citizens who stepped in at a time of need, and the countless families and communities whose lives were forever changed.

This is a day to remember and take a moment of silence and remember the courage, compassion, and unity that emerged from unimaginable darkness. We remember those who continue to carry the weight of that day and may we never forget their names, their stories, their families, or the profound impact they left on our nation.

📕 The “Big Red Book” Is Coming! 📕Town Clerk Ginger Buteau would like to notify all Auburn voters that the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office has begun mailing copies of the 2026 Information for Voters Guide, affectionately known as the “Red Book”…or, in this year’s case, the BIG Red Book! At 87 pages, this year’s guide explains all nine ballot questions appearing on the November 3, 2026 State Election ballot. We encourage every voter to take the time to read the guide, understand the questions, and make an informed decision on each one rather than unintentionally leaving questions blank.

At the back of the book, you’ll find a handy Voter Checklist where you can mark your choices for the ballot questions and candidate races. You may bring the checklist with you when voting on Election Day or during In-Person Early Voting…or take a photo of it beforehand for easy reference. Just remember: Please take your checklist with you when you leave the voting booth!

Auburn Housing Authority is a duly organized public housing agency. State and Federal lawmakers promulgate rules and regulations by which the housing authority must abide. The authority’s funding is received directly from state and federal agencies.

A five-member Board of Commissioners oversees the authority, providing leadership and advice and advocating for current and future housing. As public officials, they hold meetings according to M.G.L. chapter 39 sections 2B of open meeting law. We post all meetings with the Town Clerk at the Town Hall.

The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration of Federal and State programs. Together the Executive Director and Board form a powerful force in serving those in need within this community.
