Campus Litter Pickup

🌿🌳Starting at the West Campus Fieldhouse, we removed 62 pounds of litter - 41 pounds of trash and 21 pounds of recycling - covering West Thach Avenue, Hemlock Drive, and Parkerson Mill Creek.

Parkerson Mill Creek is our main urbanized watershed and stream, but it faces ongoing challenges from urban runoff and pathogens and is listed as an impaired water body. That makes restoration, cleanup, and stewardship efforts especially important.

Working with Risk Management and Safety (RMS), we focused on removing litter to support a safe, healthy environment for the university community.

The cleanup was registered with the National Wildlife Federation’s Clean Earth Challenge, a nationwide effort that has helped remove more than 15 million pieces of trash and debris since 2022.🌳🌿

Contamination happens when trash gets mixed in with recyclables or items are tossed into the wrong bin. One wrong item can compromise an entire load and undo the efforts of everyone who is recycling correctly.

🐅 Today we recognize International Tiger Day, a global reminder that protecting wild tigers means protecting the forests and ecosystems they call home.

With approximately 5,711 wild tigers remaining worldwide, there is hope. Their numbers are beginning to recover after more than a century of decline. But their future still depends on strong, region-specific conservation efforts.

Why tigers matter:
🌿 Apex Predators: Tigers help keep prey populations balanced, supporting healthy ecosystems.
🌳 Healthy Forests: Protecting tiger habitats also preserves vast forests, clean water sources, and countless other species.
⚠️ Major Threats: Habitat loss from deforestation and illegal poaching continue to threaten their survival.

Shredded and recycled ♻ 3,300 pounds of paper 📁 during this week's Document Shredding Day ✂📄

✂️🗂️ The Waste Reduction and Recycling Department will hold a document shredding day on Tuesday, July 21 from 8:30-11:30 am at the loading dock of Facilities Management 8 at 1161 W. Samford Ave. (university departments only). An approved Certificate of Records Destruction form is required for all shredding and must be submitted at least 72 hours before the scheduled shredding date. Participating departments will be billed $3.50 per box for shredding. If pick-up is needed, a labor fee will be charged, or departments may drop off material to be shredded. Submit a work order request online. For more information, contact the Waste Reduction and Recycling Department at 334-844-9461 or [email protected].
