Twenty-five years later, I still remember it like it was yesterday. I had just finished a graveyard patrol shift and was in the briefing room watching the events of September 11th unfold on television. It was unbelievable.

Today, we remember the thousands who lost their lives, their families, and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We will never forget.

Today we were able to celebrate my good friend, Sergeant Raquel Rios, as she retires from the Merced Police Department. Raquel has dedicated herself to serving the people of the City of Merced with incredible commitment, compassion, and professionalism. She has always been someone who truly cared about the community she served and gave her best every day to make our community a better place.

Thank you Raquel for your many years of service, dedication, and friendship. Congratulations on your well earned retirement! Wishing you all the best in this next chapter.

The lines are long, but the food is delicious! The event continues until 8:00 PM, but the food is going fast, so come out and enjoy it while you can! Great job to all the event organizers, vendors, volunteers, and everyone else who helped make this event happen and strengthen our community.

I enjoyed spending the day there, catching up with friends and running into Merced Police Department Sergeant Rios, who is working her final day before beginning her well earned retirement.

Thank you, Sergeant Rios, for your service and dedication to our community. Wishing you a very happy and well deserved retirement!

It was an honor to welcome NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman to Atwater and Merced County!

Administrator Isaacman flew into Castle Airport to visit Castle Air Museum, taking time to learn about Castle’s incredible aviation history. His visit was accompanied by a NASA FA-18 flyover.

Administrator Isaacman also invested his time in the next generation by answering questions from UC Merced students and students from the Merced Union High School District. His willingness to engage with local students provided an inspiring opportunity to learn more about NASA, aerospace, engineering and the future of space exploration.

Thank you, Administrator Isaacman, for visiting our community and Castle Air Museum, and for taking the time to connect with our students.

What a great weekend in our community!

I had the opportunity to watch a few daredevils rappel down The Tioga Hotel during United Way of Merced County’s Over The Edge fundraiser. What an incredible event and a great way to raise money for our community. Because I was only a week out from shoulder surgery, I had to put my own rappelling adventure on hold until next year.

I also had the opportunity to attend Playhouse Merced’s production of Come From Away. What an amazing amount of local talent! The performance was outstanding and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the great productions they have in the works. There are still a few Come From Away shows remaining, so I encourage you to make your reservations.

TRAFFIC ALERT – BUHACH ROAD

If you frequently travel Buhach Road between SR-140 and SP, please plan ahead.

Per Merced County Department of Public Works, construction will take place August 20th through September 28th, with one-way traffic control in the area. Expect delays and give yourself extra time when traveling through the construction zone.

Please be patient with the workers who are out there improving our roads, and whenever possible, consider using an alternate route to help reduce congestion and keep everyone safe.

Roger Wood was an incredible person and an invaluable part of the Atwater and Merced County community. He cared deeply about the people who called this community home and always wanted the very best for Atwater and Merced County.

I’m grateful for the many ways Roger gave back and made a difference over the years. His dedication, kindness, and love for our community will not be forgotten.

Roger, I always enjoyed getting a chance to sit and talk with you, especially at the Fair. You will be missed, but your legacy will live on for generations to come. Thank you for everything you did for our community to make it a better place.
