Some moments remind us that although we represent different towns and cities, we are all one Tipton County.

Today, the City of Covington hosted municipalities from across the county for a moving September 11 remembrance service. Together, we paused to remember the lives lost, honor the heroes who ran toward danger and reflect on a day that forever changed our nation.

The sight of a bald eagle and the empty saddle tribute, the solemn ringing of the remembrance bell, the 21-gun salute, the sound of bagpipes and the placement of flowers made this ceremony especially meaningful.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember where we were. We still remember how we felt. Most importantly, we still remember those who never came home.

Thank you to the City of Covington for bringing Tipton County together for such a beautiful tribute.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Injury Crash on Highway 51at Tipton Road

At approximately 4:10 p.m. on September 9, 2026, officers with the Atoka Police Department responded to an injury crash involving a motorcycle on northbound Highway 51 near Tipton Road.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle was pulling out from the crossover at Tipton Road as a motorcycle was traveling northbound on Highway 51. The motorcycle subsequently left the roadway, and the motorcycle operator sustained serious injuries.

The driver was transported by helicopter to Regional One Health in Memphis and was reported to be in critical condition.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. A thank you to the Munford Police Department, Atoka and Munford Fire Departments, Tennessee Highway Patrol and Tipton County Emergency Management Agency for their assistance.

The Atoka Police Department asks motorists traveling through the area to use caution and remain alert, particularly around the Highway 51 construction zones and crossover areas.

🚨 FINAL UPDATE: All roads are now OPEN and clear following this afternoon’s crash.

Thank you to everyone for your patience while emergency crews worked the scene and roadways were closed.

Our thoughts are with the individual who had to be airlifted, as well as their family and loved ones.

Thank you to all of the first responders who assisted at the scene and worked to get the roadways safely reopened.

🚨 UPDATE — ROAD CLOSURES 🚨

Traffic is beginning to reopen following the earlier crash at Highway 51 and Tipton Road.

✅ Southbound Highway 51 — OPEN
✅ East Tipton Road — OPEN
⛔ Northbound Highway 51 — CLOSED
⛔ West Tipton Road — CLOSED

Please continue to avoid the closed areas and use alternate routes while emergency crews remain on scene.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – SOUTH TIPTON ROAD

All four lanes of South Tipton Road and HWY 51 are currently blocked due to a crash. A medical helicopter is responding to the scene for an airlift.

Please avoid the area and use an alternate route while emergency crews are working.

We will update this post as soon as we receive further information.

Please give first responders plenty of room to work and use caution in the area.

For the past 15 years, Wesley Yarbrough has been a dependable and familiar face here at the Town of Atoka.

As our Public Works Director, Wesley cares deeply about this community and the people who call it home. Whether he is leading his team, solving a problem or working behind the scenes to keep Atoka running smoothly, we can always count on him to get the job done.

Wesley, thank you for the time, heart and hard work you have given to Atoka over the past 15 years. We are proud to have you on our team and grateful for all you do. Congratulations on this special milestone! 🎉

🇺🇸 Labor Day is about the people who put in the work.

The holiday dates back to the late 1800s, when American workers were advocating for better working conditions, fair wages and reasonable hours. The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882, and it became a federal holiday in 1894.

But here in Atoka, we don’t have to look far to see what hard work looks like.

It’s the teacher preparing a classroom, the first responder answering the call, the crew working outside on a hot Tennessee day, the small business owner opening the doors each morning, the healthcare worker caring for a neighbor and all the people working behind the scenes to keep our community going.

Labor Day gives us a day to recognize the generations of workers who came before us and the people who continue putting in the work today.

To everyone who helps make Atoka the community we’re proud to call home, thank you, and Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸
