SWITA was happy to answer the call when some stranded motorists needed to get to safe shelter during the blizzard on Sunday, March 15th. Our Executive Director John McCurdy was contacted by the Cass County Sheriff's Office, Atlantic, IA to see about the possibility of transporting these folks and SWITA Driver Steve Herrington stepped up to meet John with a bus. The Atlantic Police Department followed the bus to the edge of town and the Iowa Department of Transportation provided a snowplow to es**rt the bus to Interstate 80 safely. The Iowa State Patrol then es**rted the bus to the scene of multiple accidents where people were stranded. Steve's professional driving in very difficult (low visibility and high winds) conditions safely allowed 20 people, a dog, and two cats to be taken from the Interstate to the Nishna Valley YMCA for safe shelter. Thanks to Atlantic Fire & Rescue, Elk Horn Fire and Rescue, and the many other agencies that were on scene to assist those motorists. Cass Health Public Health Department also helped coordinate transporting a family of four from the hospital to a local hotel following the accidents. Such a great example of community coming together to help those in need.

❄️ Last night’s blizzard and interstate pileup outside of Atlantic left about 50 travelers needing a place to stay overnight.

The Atlantic YMCA stepped up to provide shelter, and we felt it was only right to pitch in as well. We brought over donuts, sandwiches, and snacks for those taking shelter.

We also saw other members of the community stepping up and doing their part too!!
Big thank you to Community 1st Credit Union for covering the donuts!
Another huge thank you to Jon from Hiland Dairy for donating the milk!

Grateful for organizations like the YMCA that help our community in moments like this. Stay safe out there today!

So proud of our amazing community ❤️

SWIE is grateful that we have never had to make an emergency call to the fire department. Still, we certainly sleep better at night knowing we have great fire and rescue departments within minutes of our production sites. Fire protection and emergency response teams are critical to the welfare of every community. We can’t say thanks enough to the local fire departments. Many of them consist of volunteers who respond to calls regardless of the time of day or the weather conditions.

It was our pleasure to host representatives from 12 fire departments at our first ever “giving event.”

SWIE has facilities in both the Anita and Massena fire protection jurisdictions. Alisa Kool and Rick Wheatley of the Massena Iowa Volunteer Fire & Rescue accepted a check from Randy Dreher, SWIE Board President. Eric Steffensen, Anita Fire Chief, was also on hand.

To show support and appreciation for the mutual aid assistance that exists between area departments, the following departments were also recognized and presented with a cash donation: Adair, Atlantic, Bridgewater, Casey, Corning, Cumberland, Fontanelle, Griswold , Greenfield, Prescott and Villisca.

With great gratitude, Mike Kennon. Cass County Emergency Management Coordinator, was recognized for his role in providing proactive leadership when it comes to preparing for and responding to emergencies.

Thank you, thank you. Fire Fighters. Please know you are appreciated.

Zeb McFarland. Thank you for your presentation at today’s Homeland Security Conference.

It's National Burn Awareness Week. 🔥⚠️

All week long, we're helping to raise awareness for preventing flammable liquid burn injuries. Did you know that gasoline and other flammable liquids release flammable vapors that can travel to an ignition source and cause a fire or explosion?
