⚖️National Correctional Officers Week⚖️
May 3rd - 9th, 2026

This week we would like to recognize and thank the wonderful staff at the Cass County Jail. We are honored to have such an amazing group of Correctional Officers / Jailers that ensure the security and safety of the public while also ensuring the well-being of the inmates. This is a difficult and often very thankless job. There is an entire, unseen side of the process that occurs after an arrest is made. Our Jail staff wears vastly different hats day in and day out. Yet they continue to show up and serve our community. They deserve far more than one week of recognition and notice. But for this week, please show our Jail staff gratitude and thanks; they without a doubt deserve it!

To our Jail staff: You are seen and greatly appreciated. Even the longest days are made far more manageable while knowing we have such dedicated and experienced staff holding things down. Thank you for everything that you continue to do!

*Actual Drone Footage Below*

This incident serves as a strong example of the effective deployment of the Cass County Drone Team. Following a vehicle pursuit, the suspect fled on foot into an open field and ultimately into a creek. The incident occurred during nighttime hours in early spring, with temperatures in the mid-30s following recent rainfall. Under these conditions, the situation extended beyond a criminal matter, presenting significant environmental risks. Prolonged exposure to the elements created a potential life-threatening scenario for the suspect, making timely apprehension critical for the safety of both the public and the individual involved.

The Cass County Drone Team responded rapidly to the scene. Officers from multiple agencies established a perimeter and initiated a coordinated ground search. A K9 unit from a neighboring county tracked the suspect to a deep creek bed. The footage being presented includes multiple perspectives and camera capabilities, all captured by a single drone platform. Utilizing thermal imaging technology, the drone operator successfully located the suspect within the creek bed and provided real-time aerial guidance to officers on the ground, leading to a safe and efficient apprehension. It was later confirmed that the suspect had entered a waterway, reinforcing concerns regarding potential hypothermia due to the environmental conditions. Prompt location and recovery of the individual helped mitigate these risks. The suspect received medical evaluation and was cleared of any life-threatening injuries.

The Cass County Drone Team has been fortunate to receive substantial financial support from generous donors within the community and surrounding areas. The team’s continued success is made possible through the contributions of businesses, organizations, and individuals who share our commitment to public safety. This incident is a direct reflection of the impact of that support. Elite Octane Inc.

As a reminder - all criminal charges pending from this case are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in the court of law.

Please help us celebrate and appreciate our family at the Cass County Public Safety Communications as we slide into National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week! Cass County and surrounding communities are fortunate to have the best of the best answering the call, literally, to rapidly and professionally retrieve critical information, document necessary items and dispatch all types of first responder resources to keep our communities as safe as possible.

We also recognize surrounding counties, some municipalities and Iowa State Patrol dispatch centers along with their members, as we are all a team working together despite our geographical locations or colors of uniform.

Thank you, all, for your service to our communities and people. We are without a doubt safer because of your hard work, dedication and sacrifices.

Behind every call, every emergency, and every moment of uncertainty, sits a Public Safety Dispatcher, ready to be the calm in your chaos.

During National Telecommunications Week, we recognize the unseen heroes of Public Safety. The dispatchers who answer the call, no matter the hour. The ones who stay calm when everything else feels chaotic. The voices that guide, reassure, and coordinate help when it’s needed most.

They are the FIRST First Responder. They gather critical information, coordinate and send resources, and often provide the lifeline between good and evil, until help arrives. They carry the weight of every call from the moment it begins to long after it is over, yet continue to show up unselfishly with professionalism, compassion, determination and mental strength.

To My Crew: Your strength in the toughest moments, your calm in the chaos, and your unwavering commitment to this community does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your dedication, your resilience, and your commitment to serving others. You are the steady voice people depend on when everything else feels uncertain, and I’m grateful for the difference you make every day!

Cass County is extremely fortunate to have over 100 years of experience sitting in our chairs.
