On November 8, 2022, Stanton Township Public Schools will have a Non-Homestead Operating Millage Proposal on the ballot. If approved by the voters, the district would be able to continue levying 18 mills for its operating millage, just as it has done since at least 2004.
Our district receives most of our funding from the State on a per-pupil basis. The amount we receive per-pupil is called the Foundation Allowance. When setting the District’s State Aid, the State assumes each school district is collecting a full 18 mills of operating millage each year. When property values rise faster than the rate of inflation, then by law the school district’s operating millage rate that can be levied gets reduced. That has happened to our district this year. Even though the State assumes that we will collect the 18 mills, when we are unable to (unless the voters approve the millage proposal), the State will not make up the difference. The result of this would be a reduced Foundation Allowance, and a loss of operational funding. For the 2022-2023 school year, we are looking at a funding loss of approximately $24,671.
If voters approve this millage proposal, we would be able to levy the 18 mills required to receive full funding from the State. This tax is levied only on non-homestead property and does not apply to your primary place of residence. Primary residences (homestead properties) are exempt from the school district’s operating millage.
