The Atlantic Highlands Police Department proudly congratulates Sergeant Jonathan Elmer on completing his final shift on May 26, 2026. His retirement will become effective on September 1, 2026, marking the conclusion of 25 years of dedicated service to the residents of Monmouth County.

Sergeant Elmer began his law enforcement career in 1999 with the Manasquan Police Department as a Class I Special Officer. He subsequently served as a Class II Special Officer with both the Manasquan Police Department and the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department until 2001. That same year, he was appointed as a full-time Police Officer with the Englishtown Police Department, where he served until 2006. He then continued his career with the Interlaken Police Department as a full-time officer until the department’s dissolution in 2010.

On October 13, 2010, Patrolman Elmer joined the Atlantic Highlands Police Department, where he would serve the community for the next 16 years. In recognition of his leadership and professionalism, he was promoted to Sergeant in 2022.

Sergeant Elmer is the kind of officer who will not soon be forgotten. His fellow officers valued his camaraderie and leadership, while members of the community appreciated his approachable and outgoing nature.

Although Sergeant Elmer will be greatly missed, his legacy will endure through the officers he mentored and prepared to carry on the department’s mission. We thank him for his unwavering dedication to the Borough of Atlantic Highlands and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.

🚲 May is National Bicycle Safety Month 🚲

☀️ With warmer weather, comes more cyclists on our roadways ☀️

⬅️ Passing too closely is a recipe for disaster. If you see a bicyclist keep your distance ➡️

🚴🏽‍♀️ It’s okay to pass bicyclists when they can’t pedal as fast as your car. Just make sure you give them plenty of space 🚴🏽‍♀️

👮🏾 NJ State law says, the driver of a vehicle must leave at least 4 feet of space between the vehicle and the bicyclist. If 4 feet cannot safely be given, the driver must slow to 25 mph or less and be prepared to stop until it is safe to pass 👮🏾

Let’s all do our part to make our roadways safer for bicyclists!

The annual Learn 2 Ride and Safe Bike Skills presented by EZ-Ride New Jersey and the Atlantic Highlands Police Department was a tremendous success over the weekend. There were approximately 20 new riders in attendance throughout the day.

A special thanks to our own, Sergeant Adam Gurian for organizing the event. We would also like to thank Lisa Lee from EZ-Ride and Highlander Bicycle Company for the great partnership.

Today, members of the AHPD had the opportunity to attend the Monmouth County ARRIVE Together and Link 2 Care Resource Fair for Law Enforcement, held at Brookdale.

Officers connected directly with a wide range of vital community resources available throughout Monmouth County. These partnerships provide critical support for individuals in need, spanning key areas such as mental health services, drug and alcohol treatment, youth programs, and elder care.

The event concluded with a recruitment fair, offering additional opportunities to strengthen the law enforcement and public service community.
