Born in 1889, A. Philip Randolph, a disciplined intellectual—he was the valedictorian of his high school graduating class—grew to become one of the greatest Civil Rights leaders of the 20th century.
Randolph secured landmark victories in Jim Crow America, including winning better wages and workplace conditions— dignity—for the Black workers who provided first-class service to often disrespectful, bigoted train passengers who rode in the luxurious Pullman sleeping cars.
The desegregation of the military and the antidiscrimination laws that protect workers today, are a result of this giant’s strategic brilliance in organizing and negotiating. A. Philip Randolph’s life teaches us that organized people can–and have–not only transform lives, but an entire nation.
