The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is thrilled to announce the graduation of the Basic Jail Academy Class 162.

We celebrated this milestone with a formal graduation ceremony, joined by DKSO Command Staff, employees, and the proud families and friends of our graduates. We honored the dedication and hard work of 8 new Detention Officers and 1 Deputy Sheriff.

From building new friendships to catching fish, our young men enjoyed an unforgettable experience—and several participants caught their very first fish ever! Today was about more than fishing; it was about mentorship, fellowship, and creating lasting memories that will inspire these young men for years to come. 💙☺️🎣

DECATUR, GA – (June 16, 2026) – The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with
the U.S. Marshals Service, has arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of
23-year-old Shakiya Pridgen and her unborn child earlier today at a residence on
Peppertree Circle in Decatur.

Devin Anthony, 26, was located and apprehended at a residence in the 1200 block of Quail Hunt Drive in Riverdale. He is charged with Aggravated Assault with Intent to Murder,
Feticide, and Murder-Malice, all felony offenses.
"As Sheriff, I believe it is paramount that I use my authority to ensure that we work tirelessly
to apprehend dangerous individuals who threaten the safety of our residents," said DeKalb County Sheriff Melody M. Maddox.

“This act of senseless violence claimed the lives of a young mother and her unborn child, devastating a family and our community. From the moment this tragic incident was reported, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S.
Marshals Service were committed to swiftly taking this individual into custody to protect
the victim’s family and the DeKalb County community at large." Anthony was transported to the DeKalb County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

It is with profound sadness that Rockdale County Fire Rescue announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Juan Antonia Smith II, who passed away on June 12, 2026.

Today, we honor a brave firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. His courage, dedication, and selflessness exemplified the highest ideals of the fire service and will never be forgotten.

Though his watch has ended, his legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the community he served, and the brothers and sisters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Firefighter Smith. We have the watch from here. ❤️
