What started as a holiday weekend quickly transformed into a working trip for our Consul General Katherine Raeymaekers in the following days!

The long labor day weekend allowed her to travel across Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, for meetings with partners, strengthening connections, and advancing shared economic and diplomatic priorities.

📍 First stop: Mississippi
In Jackson, she met with the team at the Mississippi Development Authority, including Executive Director William Cork, to discuss opportunities for collaboration and investment. She also had the opportunity to meet with Kimberly Jones Merchant, CEO of the Mississippi Center for Justice, to learn more about the organization's work and impact across the state.

📍 Next stop: Louisiana
Where she reconnected with partners from GNO, Inc. (Greater New Orleans, Inc.) and the World Trade Center New Orleans. The latter, together with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, facilitated an interesting breakfast meeting with international stakeholders and partners from different Louisiana ports to discuss opportunities for international cooperation and trade. She further met with the leadership of the newly started Louisiana Future Energy Center for an engaging discussion. The final stop in Louisiana was among colleagues, catching up with the Consul General of France in Louisiana.

📍 Final stop: Alabama
The trip concluded in Mobile, Alabama, where she met with the Mobile Chamber, representatives from ArcelorMittal, and members of the Downtown Mobile Alliance. She also visited the Port of Mobile, gaining valuable insights into one of the region's key economic and logistics hubs.

From economic development and trade to innovation and community engagement, this mission trip highlighted the different ties and shared interests between Belgium and the Gulf South. Thank you to all that hosted our Consul General and our Belgian Honorary Consul for Alabama and Mississippi, Jonathan Hoffmann, as well as our Belgian and Honorary Consul for Louisiana, Roland Vandenweghe.

She is passionate about politics and migration dynamics, but also enjoys exploring the worlds of fashion, theatre and literature. She particularly appreciates discovering new perspectives and cultures through travel, books and arts. 🎭

Why the Consulate ?
“Joining the Consulate General of Belgium in Atlanta is a great opportunity to build on my academic background and gain practical experience in the field of diplomacy.
Throughout my studies, I have developed a strong interest in international politics and in the role played by major powers in shaping global relations, with a particular interest in the United States and its important place in the international political landscape. I was especially drawn to the Southeast of the United States because of its rich history, cultural diversity and multicultural character. This internship is a great opportunity for me to discover the region firsthand, deepen my understanding of the relationship between Belgium and the United States, and gain valuable insight into the day-to-day work of a diplomatic
mission. I am very excited to join the team ! ⭐”

Why the Consulate General of Atlanta?
“While I was in school, I always said that my dream job after graduation would be one where I could work in a French-speaking or francophone environment, whether in an international company or within the field of government relations. After completing an exchange program at Sciences Po Lille, I became increasingly interested in foreign affairs and international diplomacy and knew I wanted to pursue opportunities in that area.

When I saw the position with the Consulate General of Belgium in Atlanta on LinkedIn, I felt it was an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, further immerse myself in an international and multicultural environment, and continue using my French language skills. It also allowed me to remain closer to home while building a strong foundation in diplomacy and international relations”.

Consul Jannes Dewulf had a wonderful time "traveling the world" at the Cobb International Festival, organized by Cobb County and Chairwoman Lisa Cupid. 🧳🌍

Thank you for inviting Belgium to this vibrant event and for bringing together our international community to celebrate its rich diversity. It was a pleasure to be present and to share in the festivities alongside so many cultures and traditions.

Fun fact: Cobb County is home to more than 200 international businesses representing over 30 nations. It is always inspiring to learn more about the global connections and cultural diversity that make Georgia such a dynamic state.

Consul General Katherine Raeymaekers had the pleasure of attending the Consulate General luncheon organized by The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center). It was a great opportunity to connect with the King Center to learn about their priorities and on how we could support them with their initiatives of advancing peace, justice, nonviolence, education, and global citizenship. 🌍☮️⚖️📚

Also this year, we look forward to supporting them during the Beloved Community International Expo taking place Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 11AM-5PM EST at The King Center. Make sure to come by the Belgian stand! 👋

Our friends at Global Atlanta organized Consular Conversation OTP (Outside of the Perimeter) this time in Gwinnett County! The Consul General did not only have the privilege to be a guest speaker, but more importantly, she was joined by several Belgian companies active in Gwinnet! And wow, it’s fantastic to see the work and impact of our Belgian footprint: Belgium is ranked 12th in terms of international businesses established in Gwinnett, which we would argue is not too bad for a county that is the size of Maryland! 🇧🇪

During the fireside chat several topics were addressed, ranging Belgium’s innovative assets in the heart of Europe to the Belgian growing footprint in Georgia. And with World Cup still fresh in everybody’s mind, the impact of sports as a key diplomatic enabler got also highlighted.

The insights and firsthand experiences from BARCO, CE+T and Aluvision, all Belgian companies established in Gwinnett county, completed an interesting overview of how doing business is mutually beneficial for Georgia and Belgium. A message also clearly echoed by UCB panelist, representing one of the largest recent Belgian investments in the USA, here in Rowen, Gwinnet county.

Thank you to , ,, and of course Global Atlanta for hosting us.
