After a historic shutdown, the Department of Homeland Security has officially reopened.

For the fire and emergency services community, this means critical funding and support are back in place for programs and agencies we rely on every day, including the FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Disruptions to DHS funding put essential resources at risk, from AFG and SAFER grants to training, coordination, and national response capabilities. Volunteer departments depend on these programs to remain equipped, staffed, and ready to respond.

The NVFC continues to advocate for strong, stable investment in the fire and emergency services.

🚨 Call to Action – SB 143 Needs Your Help 🚨

SB 143 (Pension Bill) was heard in committee today but was not called for a vote.

We need your voice to help move this forward.

📞 Please call Chairman John Carson’s office at 404-656-7855 and respectfully ask him to bring SB 143 up for a vote at the next committee meeting.

⏳ Time is critical – the legislative session ends next week, and this bill is at risk of not advancing without immediate action.

Every call makes a difference. Please take a few minutes to help support SB 143 today.

03/23/2026

Thank you to those who have already taken the time to reach out in support of Senate Bill 143.

We now have confirmation that SB 143 (Rule of 80 – work and collect changes to the pension fund) will be heard by the House of Representatives Retirement Committee tomorrow from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Coverdell Building, Room 406.

Your presence is critical.

We are asking all available members to attend in uniform and show strong support. Please plan to arrive no later than 1:30 PM so committee members and attendees will see our presence as they enter the meeting.

If you have not yet done so, please continue to reach out to Retirement Committee members using the contact list previously provided.

A strong showing—both in the hallway and in the hearing room—will make a powerful impact.

Thank you for your continued support of Georgia’s fire service.

🚨 Action Needed: Support SB 143 🚨

The Georgia State Firefighters Association is proud to support Senate Bill 143, a critical step toward improving retirement flexibility and strengthening the future of our fire service.

SB 143 will help:
✔️ Provide more realistic retirement options for firefighters
✔️ Allow experienced firefighters to remain in or return to service
✔️ Support recruitment and retention across Georgia

This bill has already passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support, and now it’s time for us to help push it forward.

📣 We need your voice!
Please take a few minutes to reach out to Retirement Committee members and encourage them to support SB 143.

⏰ A subcommittee meeting may take place this Tuesday from 2:00–4:00 PM at the Coverdell Building (pending final confirmation). Your outreach before then can make a real impact.

Together, we can ensure Georgia’s firefighters receive the support and retirement security they deserve.
