In Selma AL today, a commemoration was held marking the 60th anniversary of the clash between law enforcement officers and civil rights protesters on March 7, 1965. That day became known as “Bloody Sunday.” During that protest, Georgia Congressman John Lewis led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, during which state troopers and police attacked the marchers, including Lewis. The attack shocked the nation and galvanized support for the U.S. Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Every day when students come into Woodruff Library, they walk past this beautiful photograph by Scott Cunningham, depicting the funeral of Congressman Lewis as his casket was carried across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on July 30, 2020. We’re so grateful to Elisa and Bobby Ezor for the generous donation of this moving tribute to Congressman Lewis and the opportunity to share this pivotal moment in U.S. history with all of our visitors.

Today a group of teachers and students went to see the final performance of “Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski,” a one-man-show starting Pace alum Andrew Benator ‘89. It was amazing! Also amazing was our good fortune in being able to sit next to retired English teacher Ricks Carson!

Middle School students are learning about important figures in Black history through our Black History Month activity, matching the people on the left with their occupation on the right. It’s not easy but they’re definitely engaged!

We loved bringing Pace graduate Andrew Benator ‘89 to campus today to perform a scene from his current one-man show Remember This: The Lessons of Jan Karski, currently at The Theatrical Outfit. The students were rapt as they learned about this Polish diplomat who fought his way across Europe bringing evidence of the Holocaust to Western countries. And there was a reunion with his History teacher, Ms. Smith.

We had so much fun in the Soni Family Library yesterday! It was World Read Aloud Day and we invited Upper School Students to read aloud to the Lower School students. The Lower School students also got a bookmark to take with them. Everyone had a lovely time. 😁 📖
