It is with great sadness and a heavy heart the Lawrenceville Lions Club announces the passing of longtime member, former club Secretary and District I Hall of Fame member Judy Stamsen and wife of Lion Pete Stamsen for 46 years.

Lion Judy was one of
the kindest and most dedicated to serving our community and our club that I know. She will be very much missed.

Lion Pete shared the following notice this morning:

"Good morning to all my Family & FB Friends. I am writing this with a very heavy heart. A little over 2 weeks ago on February 7th, My Sweet Wife of 46 years, Judy, The Love of my life took her last journey to go home to be with Her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. She is no longer in pain. Please keep us, Her Family, in your prayers. Michael, Marty, their Spouses & Grandchildren will appreciate that. She Loved y’all.

A Memorial Service will be held in her honor in the near future."

We will share details of her Memorial Service and final arrangements as soon as they are finalized. In the meantime our sincere condolences and prayers are with Lion Pete and their entire family

In Memory & Service,

Lion Brian Donegan

The Lawrenceville Lions Club wishes to share the news of the passing of one of our longtime members, Kathy McMillian.

Kathryn Burts McMillian, age 84, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Her services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church, 395 W. Crogan Street, Lawrenceville, with Rev. Adam Hilderbrandt officiating. The Viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park, 925 Lawrenceville Highway, Lawrenceville. Food and fellowship will be held afterwards hosted by the church.

Mrs. McMillian received her BS in Early Childhood Education in 1962 from Florida State University. She taught at Lawrenceville Elementary for over twenty-four years. On June 26, 1965, she married Ephie Joe McMillian and raised two daughters, Sheryl Denice McMillian and Sheila Blahnik. She was a member of the Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church and the Wesley Sunday School Class for over fifty-five years. Kathy also belonged to the Lawrenceville Lions Club, Garden Club, and various circle and bible studies. Her favorite pastime, besides studying the Bible, was gardening and working in her yard.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Barbara Burts and survived by daughter, Denice McMillian of Atlanta, and daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and David Blahnik of Hoschton; grandchildren, Sarah Green, Nathan Blahnik and Seth Blahnik; sibling Joyce Robinson (brother-in-law Tom and son Tommy Robinson).

Lion Kathy was a joy and blessing to know. She had a huge heart and cared very much for the community. We will miss her very much and our prayers are with her family during this time

PLEASE BE WEATHER AWARE!! Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. If you are in a flood prone area have a plan to seek higher ground if necessary. Also be prepared for the potential of an extended period without power.

Long post. But please read.

I just want to take a moment to stress the importance of the weather impacts we are going to experience over the next few days. I know that so many times we might be on the line or "potential" for big impacts, but sometimes miss out. We were prepared for the potential for heavy rain from the last tropical system..but it really underperformed. THIS SYSTEM IS MUCH DIFFERENT.

We aren't saying we "might" have a lot of rain or we "might" have damaging wind, but we are saying we "WILL" have a lot of rain and we "WILL" have damaging wind. This is a situation where the remnants of a landfalling major hurricane hits the Gulf, then travels through our entire state going right through the metro area. Models have been very consistent with this.

Please be safe…
DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATER.
DO NOT TOUCH DOWNED POWER LINES.

Here's what we are preparing for:
Rain: 4-8”+. We may increase this range.
Wind: Gusts 40-60mph in the metro area. Higher gusts east of the city. Expect trees down and widespread power outages
Flooding: Flooding is likely in low lying flood prone areas. River and stream flooding is possible.
Severe threat: The main severe threat will be in east Georgia east of the track. Some of our eastern counties may have tornado warnings.
Tropical storm watch/Warning. We are all in a tropical storm watch right now. It will most likely be upgraded to a tropical storm warning as it gets closer. That doesn't happen too often.

Timing:
2 rounds of heavy rain coming in.
Round one-Today into early Thursday. This isn't from Helene. This is from a cold front.
Round two-Tropical moisture from Helene starts feeding in during the day Thursday. The wind will start kicking up later in the day Thursday with the rain getting heavier.
The most impactful part of this will be Thursday night overnight into Friday morning. It will be tough to sleep Thursday night hearing the heavy rain and trees cracking and falling in the area.

The 11Alive Weather Impact will be with you every step of the way on air, online and on all of our streaming apps.

The Lawrenceville Lions Club is teaming up with the Norcross Lions Club to sort used eyeglasses at the Norcross Lions Clubhouse on Saturday, August 24th beginning at 10:30 AM. All Lions and others wishing to volunteer are welcome to come & help out. Training is easy!

The Norcross Lions Clubhouse is part of Summerour Park. The address is 325 Price Place, Norcross, GA. Its the green-roofed building located between Summerour Middle School and Baldwin Elementary School and between the soccer field/playground and the baseball field. Because of that location, there may be limited parking next to the building if there are soccer games or practice. There is another parking lot across the street and at the schools.

If you have eyeglasses or sunglasses to bring, we can sort those too.
Glasses don't have to be in eyeglass cases. Cases are appreciated as they are used for projects like wellness kits for those in need (but cases are not required for this project) We can also take used eyeglasses that are broken. Bring all the parts you have!

Once sorted, the used eyeglasses will be donated to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation and sent on mission trips to serve the people of the world in need of glasses for sight preservation.

Come on out to help a worthwile cause. It'll be fun and rewarding. Looking forward to see y'all there.

Earlier this month a group of us took a walk around the square in Lawrenceville as we participated in Strides For Sight benefiting the great work of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation It happened to also be Comic Book Day downtown and we encountered some visitors from a long time ago and a galaxy far, far away.

Thanks to great supporters we have raised over $2,000 to provide eye care for Georgians in need which is out of this world!. There's still a few days left to make a difference and support the cause. Use The Force and let's make a difference together!
