Black Voters Matter Fund

Black Voters Matter Fund Black Voters Matter exists to build power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Black Voters Matter is a 501(c)(4) dedicated to building power in marginalized Black communities through year-round civic engagement, authentic representation, and the fight for justice. We believe effective voting is more than casting a ballot; it is a way for communities to determine their own destiny. reminded us, “Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at it

s best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”

Our mission is guided by five core beliefs. We know that true civic engagement begins with respecting and strengthening local infrastructure. We believe Black Voters Matter not only on election day but every day of the year, supporting individuals and organizations striving for justice. We affirm that Black Voters Matter everywhere, including rural counties and small towns too often overlooked by politicians and the media. We are committed to using authentic messaging that speaks to our issues, connects with our hopes, and affirms our humanity. And we recognize that the leadership, talent, and commitment of Black women must not only be celebrated but also invested in so that it can flourish and multiply. We are dedicated to ensuring that Black voices are heard, valued, and empowered in every space where decisions are made.

Four years ago, Georgia voters showed the country what can happen when our communities stay organized, informed, and committed beyond just one Election Day.

Now, Georgia is heading back into another runoff season.

Too often, people act like elections end after the headlines fade. But runoff elections still shape who holds power, whose voices get heard, and what direction our communities move in next. That’s why organizing work continues long after primary night, especially across the South.

From statewide offices to congressional and state legislative runoffs, what happens on June 16 matters.

As we head into this election, we’re looking back at the organizing, energy, and people power that helped move communities to the polls in 2022 and carrying that same spirit into 2026.

Georgia, make your plan to vote. Then check in with your people and make sure they have a plan too.

By 1860, nearly 4 million enslaved Black people were valued at approximately $3 billion, making them one of the largest asset classes in the United States. Enslaved labor produced roughly half of all U.S. exports and helped fuel the growth of banks, businesses, insurance companies, and industries across the country.

Slavery wasn't just a labor system. It was a wealth-building system.

The wealth generated through enslaved labor was invested, protected, and passed down across generations. Meanwhile, formerly enslaved Black Americans received no compensation and faced decades of policies that limited their ability to build wealth of their own.

Louisiana early voting has started and this election is too important to sit out!

They tried to eliminate majority-Black districts and silence our communities. The fight is not over and neither are we.

Early voting is your opportunity to get ahead of it. Show up before Election Day and let Louisiana know that Black voters are not going anywhere.

What’s happening right now is about locking in political control before Georgia’s changing population changes the math.

Join us beginning on June 17 as we Pack the Capitol during Georgia’s Special Session.

Fair maps are the foundation of a fair democracy, and the political power we’ve built over decades deserves protection.

When slavery ended, that wealth didn't disappear.

The banks remained. The businesses remained. The land remained. The investments remained. The wealth generated through slavery continued to grow and compound across generations.

But the people whose labor created that wealth received no compensation. Instead, Black Americans faced decades of segregation, racial violence, redlining, discriminatory lending, and barriers to building wealth of their own.

That's why conversations about reparations aren't just about the past.

They're about understanding how wealth was accumulated, who benefited from it, and how the consequences of those decisions continue to shape economic opportunity today.

The receipts exist. The question is what we're willing to do about them.

In 1860, enslaved Black people represented roughly 20% of the U.S. economy. The wealth created through slavery helped build America—but the people who created that wealth were denied the opportunity to share in it.

The receipts exist. The question is whether we're willing to act on them.

“I make six figures and still can’t afford health insurance.”

That’s what Chris from Atlanta shared with us.

Not because he isn’t working hard. Not because he “did everything wrong.” But because healthcare costs have gotten so out of control that even working families are being forced to choose between insurance and basic survival.

People are skipping care, avoiding doctors, and hoping emergencies don’t happen because this system keeps putting profits over people.

Watch Chris’s story below, then tell us:
What healthcare costs have you or your family been forced to sacrifice for lately?

As the U.S. marks its 250th year of independence on July 4, the country continues to grapple with the promises offered by the 14th Amendment: equal rights and due process for all its citizens. For more than two centuries, Black and Latino people, indigenous communities, women, Gay and Trans people, immigrants, and poor people have fought for full citizenship in a system that was never built with them in mind.

Today, June 11, as a part of its We Got Us campaign, Black Voters Matter (BVM) launches its new series called Declaration of a New Nation, to expose the lie of equality and due process in U.S. jurisprudence and life, while also offering an alternative U.S. Constitution and society that will truly build and reflect a multi-cultural democratic nation where all citizens will truly share power, prosperity, liberty, and resources.

The Declaration of a New Nation takes a multifaceted approach to exploring what true democracy looks like through the eyes of those who have historically been excluded.
