Most people think "accessible restroom" = ramp + grab bars + wide door.

It's not wrong, but it is missing something just as important: cleanliness.

Why? Because a wheelchair ramp doesn't matter if the restroom at the top of it is too dirty to enter.

Our Accessibility Consultant, Louis Do, who is blind, shared what it's like navigating public restrooms he can't visually check before using. "Cleanliness is never my favorite part of using any public facility... it takes very careful planning around bodily needs."

If a restroom isn't clean and safe, it's not actually available to everyone, no matter how many accessibility features it has on paper.

What should designers stop doing when it comes to public restrooms? 🤔

"If anything, they should start doing more," said Ben Clark, our cofounder and VP Hardware. "It feels like so many places where Thrones are needed are places where people have built out infrastructure and didn't plan ahead for bathrooms."
