Metro Atlanta is growing, and we need to make sure everyone can find an affordable place to call home.

That’s the goal for Housing Forward 2035, a new regional strategy previewed by ARC at this week's Atlanta Regional Housing Forum.

The plan calls for:
🏡 Building 367,000 new homes by 2035
💰 Cutting the region’s housing affordability gap in half
🏘️ Preserving 104,000 affordable homes at risk of being lost
📍 Putting vacant and underused properties to work
🤝 Helping communities find solutions that fit their local needs

Half a million World Cup visitors hit downtown Atlanta this summer. How'd they find major attractions and the nearest MARTA station without getting lost? New signage helped point them in the right direction.

Distinctive new pedestrian wayfinding signs, some as tall as 12.5 feet, popped up across downtown before the first match kicked off, planned with help from ARC's Livable Centers Initiative program. The signage is part of a broader push to make downtown more walkable, without the need to fumble with an app or search for phone signal.

The World Cup may be over, but the signs are staying put—and if funding comes through, more could be on the way across the city.

Metro Atlanta's housing challenge isn't slowing down, but neither is the work being done to solve it.

Join us September 2 for the Atlanta Regional Housing Forum, where ARC will publicly unveil its new Regional Housing Strategy, a coordinated framework for producing and preserving affordable housing across the 11-county metro region.

The program will also break down what the newly enacted 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act means for housing production and close with a panel connecting regional, state, and federal perspectives.

From transit to major sporting events and water resilience, the 2026 Mexico City LINK trip gave attendees an insightful look into how one of the world's largest metro regions is tackling many of the same challenges we face at home. Our delegation got a firsthand look at a transportation network moving more than 9 million riders a day. Plus, a ride on the city's cable car system, which carries an estimated 110,000 commuters daily. A unified payment system across transit platforms and remarkable cleanliness stood out as small details that add up to a big difference for riders.

Attendees also saw a creative response to a real infrastructure gap: rainwater capture systems helping serve the roughly 30% of homes not connected to the city's water grid, taking advantage of a defined rainy season.

The overall takeaway: if a metro region of 22 million can make real progress on transit, water, and growth, there's plenty for a region our size to learn from and adapt. Our delegation came back with a long list of ideas worth exploring.

ARC wants to extend a special thank you to our generous host city for welcoming our group and making us feel at home. We're already thinking about how these new perspectives can inform the work underway across metro Atlanta.
