The Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office is proud to support programs like Beyond the Bars, which focus on prevention, mentorship, accountability, and hope for our youth.

This impactful initiative gives young people and their families the opportunity to see the real-life consequences of poor decisions while also connecting them with mentors, community leaders, and support systems designed to help them succeed.

We believe public safety starts long before a courtroom. It starts with investing in our children, strengthening families, and creating opportunities for positive change. Programs like Beyond the Bars remind us that education, guidance, and community involvement can make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.

Thank you to all of the law enforcement officers, community partners, mentors, volunteers, and families who continue to work together to build a safer and stronger community for the next generation.

Students and their parents visit prison in a program aimed at curbing youth violence and gang activity in Athens-Clarke County, which has one of Georgia's highest crime rates.

A special thank you to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department for inviting our District Attorney to speak with participants in the Citizens Police Academy. It is always an honor to engage with members of our community, share the role and responsibilities of the District Attorney’s Office, and promote transparency with our stakeholders.

Last Thursday, District Attorney Kalki Yalamanchili and Director of Victim Services Ashley Duvall had the opportunity to meet with residents, discuss the work of our office, and answer questions about how we serve this community. We appreciate opportunities like these to strengthen relationships through education, communication, and trust.

On February 27, 2026, an Athens-Clarke County jury found Jabbaris Lamar Brown, Jr. guilty of the offenses of Drive by Shooting, Aggravated Assault, and Terroristic Threats. The facts at trial showed that on November 10, 2024, Mr. Brown was part of a group of individuals who fired multiple gunshots into the occupied residence of the victims in retaliation for his car being previously towed and called a separate victim making threatening statements. Luckily no one was injured. The case was handled for the District Attorney's Office by Assistant District Attorney Brian Dille, Assistant District Attorney Jack Amerson, Senior Investigator Kevin Hooks, and Victim Advocate Heather Moore. Mr. Brown was sentenced to a total sentence of 30 years with the first 15 years in prison. We would like to thank the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for their work on this case.

This past weekend, we held another Beyond the Bars mentorship session. There were moments of laughter and reflection, but most importantly, there was growth.

Participants learned the value of making good decisions and the importance of respecting and honoring their parents. In today’s fast-paced, “microwave” society, it’s important to remember that real progress takes time.

We must teach our youth to walk before they run, focusing on education and guidance, not fear, to help them build a stronger future. After all, the turtle won the race.

Stay tuned for upcoming sign-up opportunities. We are grateful for the continued partnership with our local law enforcement agencies as we work together to support and uplift our youth.

Our law enforcement community is working together to bridge gaps and provide our youth with the resources they need to become the best version of themselves.

One of the goals of Behind the Bars, a multi-agency program for local youth, is to help them change the course of their lives. ACCPD, ACC Corrections, the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, No Bars, Inc., Youth Force, and other local leaders participate in this program, understanding that it takes a village to raise our youth.

Once a month, our officers, command staff, and Community Outreach team come together at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia to serve our neighbors facing food insecurity. This month, we were joined by members of the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office and the Clarke County Sheriff's Office staff - working side by side to make an impact. Together, we packed more than 170 boxes of nonperishable food, helping ensure meals reach elderly residents and shut-ins across our community.
