This month, 54 animals from our shelter were scheduled to leave on transport to rescue partners and adopters, giving them the opportunity for a brighter future and a second chance at life.
Unfortunately, due to the recent screw worm outbreak, New York has implemented a temporary ban on animals coming from Texas. With less than two weeks before transport, all 54 of these animals suddenly lost their way out.

As a shelter, we continue to take in animals every day. When animals are unable to leave, space quickly becomes limited, putting us in an incredibly difficult position on how to make more space.

Our goal is always to save lives, but we need our community’s help now more than ever.
🐾 If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the time. You could truly save a life.

🐾 If you’re unable to adopt, please consider fostering. Opening your home, even temporarily, can keep an animal safe and give them the time they need to find a permanent family.

🐾 If you can’t foster or adopt, please share this post. The right person may see it and change an animal’s future.

These animals did nothing wrong. Their plans changed overnight, and now they need us. Together, we can help ensure they get the second chance they deserve.

🎉🐾 What a busy and exciting week it’s been at Athens Animal Services! 🐾🎉

We are thrilled to share that this week alone we have celebrated:

🐶 2 Dog Adoptions
🐱 2 Cat Foster-to-Adopts
🏡 4 Dog Foster-to-Adopts

That means 8 animals have left the shelter and are getting the chance they deserve to experience life in loving homes! Every adoption and foster-to-adopt placement creates space for us to help even more animals in need.

We still have many wonderful dogs and cats waiting for their turn. If you’ve been thinking about adopting, fostering, volunteering, or simply sharing our posts, now is the perfect time to help!

We’re not sure who started the rumor, but the cats have been discussing it all day. Every time a litter box gets scooped, another feline conspiracy theory is born.

If you stop by the shelter and hear the cats spreading whiskers and nonsense, now you know why.😂🐱
