A independent committee, Athens Forward, has committed significant resources towards influencing the outcome of the Athens mayoral election, both in the general and in the runoff.
Campaign finance filings show that Athens Forward has spent over $60,000 in the mayoral race in support of Dexter Fisher and in opposition to Tim Denson. The spending includes $27,399 on pro-Fisher mailers, $16,044 on anti-Denson mailers, and $17,000 on canvassing operations supporting Fisher.
The group Athens Forward paid for canvassing operations is The Synapse Group, which has previously worked on behalf of the Elon Musk-backed America PAC who canvassed for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
Recent filings dated to the first week of June provide more information about the committee, where its funding is coming from, and the extent to which it is spending on the election, and in particular to support one candidate, Dexter Fisher.
All of the funding for Athens Forward in this reporting cycle is from one $95,000 donation from a nonprofit called A Public Voice, Inc. based in McLean, VA.
Investigations into A Public Voice, Inc. reveal that it is part of a larger network of Republican-backed dark money groups that spend money to influence local and municipal elections and that it has donated both in support of Brian Kemp’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign and a later primary challenge against him.
The rise of dark money spending in our local elections poses a serious threat to democracy. Without full disclosure of political funding, there is no true transparency. Transparency allows the people of Athens to make informed decisions and properly evaluate the funders and messages behind candidates. Why are outside groups so invested, literally and metaphorically, in Athens? Who benefits from our division?
