ents interested in applying for awards, we also work with different faculty members, such as Dr. Roxanne MalĂ©-Brune, Dr. Monica Burdick, Dr. Emilia Marks, Dr. Nik Sathe, Dr. Lois Vines and Dr. Christopher Thompson. ONCA is managed by a small, dedicated staff. Director Beth Clodfelter specializes in awards for international travel, research, and teaching, as well as those focused on science, sustainability, and environmental issues. Meet Seph Callaway III, who received an M.F.A. from Ohio University’s School of Art and Design in 2018. Seph is currently in Cachoeira, Brazil on a grant through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. He is exploring connections between Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Carolinian culture in his artwork and studio at the Universidade Federal de Recôncavo da Bahia.

Seph explains that he worked with ONCA for nearly a year on a periodic basis to prepare his Fulbright application. Additionally, he says, “In conjunction with the Ohio University Graduate Writing Center, I was able to have my proposal proofread and edited before I submitted the final draft. Reaching out to art professor David LaPalombara, himself a past Fulbright awardee, was invaluable. His guidance and past experience as a Fulbright was very informative. As a Fulbright awardee, I will be able to further my research, while informing my studio practice. It will also increase my network capacity while giving me an edge as a studio artist and potential doctorate applicant.”

Meet Quinn Mitchell, class of 2019, who is an engineering major and a 2018 Goldwater Scholar. Goldwater Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering who intend to pursue research careers. After graduating from Ohio University, Quinn plans to research plasma kinetics modeling, earn a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, and teach at the university level.

“Ohio University’s Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has been immensely helpful throughout my undergraduate career. ONCA identified multiple scholarships for which I was eligible and guided me through the occasionally treacherous application processes. Most notably, ONCA, alongside my advisor, Dr. Monica Burdick, played an instrumental role in my winning of the Goldwater Scholarship. This award, which is a testament to the exciting undergraduate research opportunities at Ohio University, has helped me stand out while applying to top graduate schools.”

Meet Georgia Curran, class of 2019, who is currently in Bangkok, Thailand studying linguistics, law, and culture at Mahidol University through the Gilman scholarship.

“My 2019 so far has consisted of beginning my studies at the best university in Thailand, eating countless plates of pad thai, touring temples with hundreds of years of history, experiencing Bangkok’s nightlife and outdoor markets, riding around in tuk tuks, and so much more. These have already been some of the best experiences of my life and they would not have been possible if I hadn’t received the Gilman scholarship. ONCA provided me with the knowledge and guidance I needed to achieve my goals, and I would highly encourage other students to use them as a resource!”

The picture features Georgia at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Anyone who has questions about studying abroad or finding scholarships can also reach out to Georgia on Instagram at .
