Athens Main Street

Athens Main Street Program is a state accredited program that is designed to help develop a comprehensive revitalization plan for the designated Downtown Athens District.

Main Street America is a national accredited program that has been around for over 35 years and is designed to help communities develop their downtowns and commercial districts. Athens TN was designated as a Main Street city in February 2016, but after months of planning the organization officially hit the ground running on July 1. This designation will allow Athens to network with other Tennessee Main Street communities to find resources that will help build up our downtown and make it a vibrant place to work, live, shop, dine and explore recreational opportunities. Main Street of Athens is developing as a non-profit organization and is governed by a 19 member board of directors, a part-time director and 32 community volunteers that will serve on 4 committees (Design, Promotion, Organization and Economic Vitality). This team will work alongside the City of Athens, the Downtown Business Association and the Athens Chamber of Commerce to develop strategies that will be key components in the development of downtown. We want downtown to be a place that residents will be proud to call home and visitors will have a desire to return!
