Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Shooting on Parker Road; One Arrested

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at approximately 6:20 p.m., Deputies and Investigators with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 14000 block of Parker Road regarding a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies located an individual in the yard suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Deputies immediately rendered lifesaving aid by applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene.

The victim and witnesses identified the alleged shooter as Michael Alan Smith, 53, of Athens, Alabama, who remained on scene and was still in possession of the firearm. Deputies detained Smith without incident and secured the weapon.

Investigators responded to process the scene and conduct interviews. The investigation determined the shooting stemmed from a civil dispute. Smith reportedly went to the victim’s residence to confront him regarding the dispute and entered the victim’s home. After being ordered to leave the residence, Smith allegedly produced a pistol and shot the unarmed victim.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

Probable cause was established to charge Smith with Assault First Degree. Smith was transported to the Limestone County Jail where he was booked pending a bond hearing before a judge.

Statement from Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin:

“I want to commend the deputies who responded to this call for providing lifesaving measures to the victim and safely taking the alleged offender into custody. Bringing a firearm into a civil dispute and shooting an unarmed person is reckless and extremely dangerous. I’m thankful this incident did not result in a loss of life, which is always a very real possibility in situations like this.”

Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Adds New Patrol Boat to Enhance Waterway Safety

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the addition of a new patrol vessel to its Marine Unit, significantly enhancing the agency’s ability to protect and serve residents and visitors across Limestone County’s waterways.

The new patrol boat was acquired through a U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Grant administered by the Department of Homeland Security, which covered 75 percent of the vessel’s total cost. The remaining 25 percent was funded through surplus funds from the Sheriff’s Office Fiscal Year 2024 budget, allowing the agency to make this important investment without placing any additional burden on taxpayers.

The vessel is a purpose-built 27-foot Safe Boat Center Console patrol boat designed to provide the speed, reliability, and maneuverability required for modern marine law enforcement operations. The boat is equipped with advanced marine technology, including multi-band GPS, radar, thermal imaging, and side-scanning sonar. These systems will assist deputies with navigation, locating vessels during low-visibility conditions, detecting individuals or objects in the water, and supporting search and rescue or recovery operations.

The addition of this vessel will allow deputies to patrol Limestone County’s waterways more effectively, respond faster to emergencies, and strengthen boating safety efforts throughout the community.

Limestone County’s waterways, particularly along the Tennessee River, continue to see heavy recreational, fishing, and commercial use each year. The new patrol boat will enhance the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to conduct boating safety enforcement, emergency response operations, homeland security missions, and critical search and rescue efforts on the water.

“This vessel represents a major investment in the safety of our community and the future of our Marine Unit,” said Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin. “As Limestone County continues to grow, so does the need for us to have the proper equipment and technology to respond quickly, protect our waterways, and assist those in need. This new patrol boat gives our deputies enhanced capabilities to serve the public safely and effectively, and we are extremely grateful for the support provided through the U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Grant program and the Department of Homeland Security.”

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy the county’s waterways safely and responsibly. The addition of this patrol vessel will provide a stronger law enforcement presence on the water and enhance public safety for years to come.

On Monday, May 11, 2026, Deputies and Investigators with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Limestone County Courthouse after a terrorist threat was called into the Circuit Clerk’s Office. The caller stated there was a bomb inside the courthouse.

As a precaution, the courthouse was immediately evacuated. Bomb technicians from the Huntsville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF) assisted in conducting a thorough search of the building. No explosive devices were located.

During the investigation, authorities determined the threatening call originated from a local phone number. Investigators subsequently identified the owner of the phone as Everett Nathanial Welch, 42, of New Hope, Alabama.

Investigators are currently executing additional search warrants related to this case, and further charges are possible.

Statement from Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin:

“Let me be absolutely clear. Threats against our courthouse, our justice system, and the people who work and conduct business inside that building will be taken with the utmost seriousness. Anyone who believes they can create fear, disrupt the judicial process, or threaten public safety in Limestone County will be found, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I am incredibly proud of the professionalism and swift response displayed by our courthouse staff, dispatchers, deputies, and investigators throughout this incident. Their actions ensured the safety of everyone involved and allowed this threat to be addressed quickly and effectively.
