UPDATE…….

The suspect in this incident has been identified and although he is not in custody, we have no reason to think he is still in the area.

The Atchison Co Sheriff's Office is looking for an individual that ran from a deputy in the area of US 73 Hwy and Sheridan Road, which is South of Atchison.

The white male, in his 50's, was wearing blue pants and a gray sweatshirt when he ran into treeline in the area.

We have no reason to believe he is armed, but caution should be taken by anyone in contact with him.

Neither do we believe he is from the area. He may be headed South, toward the Leavenworth area.

We still don’t know the identity of the passenger, though.

The truck, which was reported stolen, and the motorcycle were recovered late last night in the Topeka area. The suspects are still unidentified and are still at large.

Help us identify these two persons and/or this truck!!

They were involved with a theft of a motorcycle in the rural area just South of Atchison on Sunday, April 27th, in the mid-afternoon.

The Atchison Police Department, along with the Atchison County Sheriff's Office, and our surrounding small towns and counties have seen an increase in vehicle thefts and thefts of property from unlocked vehicles. It’s important to develop a routine before you go to bed. Bring in your valuables, lock up your vehicles, homes, sheds, etc, and make sure your exterior lights and cameras are on.

There is a text message floating around locally that claims there is a new charge to your card. It is implying the text message is from the Exchange Bank & Trust.

The bank is aware of the scam and is reporting it.

Do NOT click on the link in the text.

Please pass the word to family, neighbors and friends. Older residents are especially susceptible to these scams.

Today, our good friend Tom, will be laid to rest.

Tom came to me after a personal tragedy and applied for a job. He felt it necessary to have someone in his family to be associated with law enforcement. So I hired him as a Corrections Officer.

Tom was grumpy, particular, stubborn....but he was a team player. He was respected (and feared) by the younger officers. If an inmate had an issue with an officer, they would request Tom to mediate. He advocated for inmates when they did not have much of a voice. He did not carry grudges and was not heavy handed.

He was not a pushover, though. Tom and I were scuffling with an inmate when he got his thumb bitten and it broke the bone.

I promoted Tom because of his personal qualities. He worked well for us. He was one of us for a long time. He knew my family and asked about them often. As a matter of fact, he knew most of the families of the staff AND the inmates.

The Sheriff and the staff of the Atchison County Sheriff's Office will miss Tom. We already do. We thank him for his service and his family for allowing him to join us for all his years.
