Garden of Surging Waves, Astoria's Chinese Heritage Park

Garden of Surging Waves, Astoria's Chinese Heritage Park The Garden of Surging Waves honors and celebrates the Chinese heritage of Astoria and the Lower Columbia River Basin. It has won 3 design awards in 2014.

The Garden of Surging Waves is pronounced “Cāng Láng Yuán” in Chinese. The garden will serve as a reminder not only of Chinese contributions to Astoria and the Pacific Northwest, but to Oregon's early ties to China that were first developed in the days of John Jacob Astor, and have flourished over the last 200 years. The award winning Garden of Surging Waves is sited directly across from Astoria's City Hall. For more information, please visit our website at www.AstoriaChineseHeritage.org.

Traditionally on the second day of the Chinese New Year, young families visit the elders. The quotes from the elders have been published, for the first time, in Oregon Historic Quarterly in its 2017 Winter Special Issue; may you have a nice visit!

Last week, glass artisan Juno carefully un-installed the interpretive panel from its steel frame. The panel will return in a few weeks. The panel graphics will be much easier to read against a new white glass backing. Thank you Juno and your two very special helpers!

135 years ago, on May 6th, 1882, President Chester A. Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act - prohibiting all Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States and denying basic freedoms because of their ethnicity.

As a show of solidarity and recognition of the incredible contributions they gave to the City of Astoria (building infrastructure, working in the canneries, and supporting the economy), former Mayor Van Dusen and a group of committed citizens created The Garden of Surging Waves.

So if you're in the area of Duane and 11th Street today, enjoy the weather and take a break - have lunch or coffee at the park and read the placard that describes the importance of this memorial.

Let's see how many pictures we can post of the park on Instagram using !
