Ashland Oregon Police Department

Ashland Oregon Police Department Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving is the cornerstone of the Ashland Police Department.

Ashland is a unique community that is one of the finest places in the country to live and work. We at the Ashland Police Department understand this and are committed to working with the community to maintain that quality of life. We understand that we have an obligation to treat all people not just with courtesy, fairness and professionalism but also with politeness and respect. As we approach our

vocation in this manner it comes naturally that we enjoy our work while assuring that our community and its guests also enjoy life. Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving is the cornerstone of the Ashland Police Department’s organizational philosophy. It is not a static endeavor but one that responds to an ever-changing situation. We make it a practice to observe fundamental principles to promote community and police partnerships in a proactive problem-solving manner. Many communities have seen ample evidence that innovative policing strategies can have a significant impact not only on crime and disorder but also on their quality of life. It is the intention of this department to work with the entire community to identify and prioritize public safety related issues in the City and work together to address those issues. We believe that this process will not only enhance public safety but will also enhance unity within our community. By working together, the Ashland Police Department and the citizens of Ashland can build bridges of trust that encourage mutual respect and positive change.

Friendly reminder: Feeding wildlife in Ashland violates AMC 9.08.280 and fines can exceed $500. We know most people do it out of kindness, but it truly does more harm than good. Help us protect our deer and bear by keeping food and attractants away from wildlife. In this case, We are Better Apart! More at ashlandoregon.gov/Wildlife.

Seen a bear, cougar or aggressive deer lately? Report it via our Wildlife Tracker; your sighting goes directly into a live map that helps us and ODFW spot patterns, focus outreach and keep wildlife wild (and out of lethal removal). Takes 2 minutes. Makes a real difference.

Did you know hazing wildlife is actually encouraged? If a deer wanders into your yard, honk your horn, clap your hands or run your sprinklers to encourage them to move along. It keeps them wild — and it’s not cruel, it’s kind.
Honk if you love them! In this case, We are Better Apart! Learn more at ashlandoregon.gov/Wildlife.

The Ashland Police Department is excited to introduce Cisco, our new facility service dog!

As part of APD's wellness program, one of our Peer Support members worked extensively to create a facility service dog program, and ultimately connected with Dogs For Better Lives to attain a facility service dog. Cisco, a 20 month old yellow lab, was donated to the Ashland Police Department by Dogs For Better Lives, and comes to us trained to assist with creating a calming environment to help with stress relief, or interactions with children or vulnerable individuals.

Cisco is assigned to Detective Lindsey Rochon Evertt, who is one of the Department's Peer Support Team members and a Major Crimes Detective. Detective Rochon Evertt's criminal case load includes s*x crimes and crimes against children, so Cisco may also be used during interviews to help comfort survivors as they share their stories.

You can plan to see Cisco out at community events, visiting schools, or taking a stroll in front of the police station during some down time. We want to thank Dogs For Better Lives, Cisco's trainers, and the volunteers who raise these puppies until they are old enough to begin their very valuable training.

Cisco was sworn in by Chief O'Meara this morning, where he showed off his "wave" trick as the Chief asked him to raise his paw. The swearing in was complete with a paw print affixed to his swearing in paperwork. 🐾

We certainly felt the love and support from our families, our community, and our City of Ashland partners last week during National Police Week! Only a few days worth of goodies are pictured here, but we had a steady stream of food and drink, and one awesome poster from the students and staff at Helman Elementary School (we love it!!) to keep us going all week long.

We are truly lucky to work in such an amazing community! Thank you!

Buckle up!

Starting Monday, May 18th and extending through Sunday, May 31st, the Ashland Police Department will be working in conjunction with our other Rogue Valley law enforcement partners on a seatbelt enforcement blitz. This means officers will be out and about in the community looking for motorists not properly wearing their seatbelts.

The primary goal of traffic enforcement is always the safety of all of our residents and visitors. Remember, Oregon State law requires all vehicle occupants to wear their seatbelts in the manner they were designed by the manufacturer (so no, wearing it underneath your arm isn’t going to cut it!). Also remember, your vehicles airbags are a Supplemental Restraint System designed to work in conjunction with your seatbelt, not in lieu of it! Your seatbelt slows you down and helps spread crash forces more evenly across the strongest parts of your body – it’s also the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers.

We’ll also be watching out for proper car seat use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports proper car seat use may increase crash survival by 71% for infants under one year of age, and up to 59% for toddlers aged one to four.

Recent crash statistics from the State of Oregon show that improper seatbelt or child restraint use was a factor in nearly 1/3 of occupant fatalities in Oregon in 2024 (103 of the 324 fatal collisions).

We hope throughout this blitz, we’ll see you all using your seatbelts appropriately; if not, a conversation with our patrol officers isn’t the worst way to spend a few minutes roadside!

Overtime funds for this safety blitz are covered by a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation, meaning no additional funding is required to be pulled from the City of Ashland. We are thankful to all our traffic safety and law enforcement partners for the continued efforts to promote vehicle occupant safety!

Don’t Feed the Deer!
We know it’s tempting. but please don’t feed the deer! Not only is it harmful to their health, it’s illegal under Ashland Municipal Code (AMC 9.08.280) and fines can exceed $500. Feeding deer congregates them, spreads disease and causes them to lose their wariness of people. Observe from a distance — that’s the kindest thing you can do.
