A statement from the Ashland Police Department:
The Ashland Auxiliary unit is comprised of community members who volunteer their time at various events throughout town to supplement our full time force. You see them nearly every weekend at the Farmer’s Market, the Corner Spot, summer concerts, assisting with church traffic downtown, and other events such as road races, Ashland Day and the Boston Marathon. They do this entirely without compensation. Collaboratively, they volunteer hundreds of hours of their time to the Town of Ashland each year, and ask of nothing in return.
As a way of explanation, the standards set forth by the 2020 enactment of the Massachusetts Police Reform Bill implemented certain requirements that reserve and auxiliary officers needed to meet in order to attain certification by the POST commission. One of those standards is the requirement of 2400 hours of sworn patrol experience. Our auxiliary officers, like most, are not sworn and have no powers of arrest, and therefore could not meet those requirements to become certified. And so, effective June 30th, the operations of the auxiliary police program must be suspended indefinitely.
These men and women have given so much of themselves because of their love for this community. Many of our full time police officers started their law enforcement careers as auxiliary officers and many surrounding communities have full time officers who started with this unit. The savings to this community have been substantial and they are an amazing example of selfless service and service above self.
On behalf of the entire Ashland Police Department, we wish to thank each and every one of you for your dedication, commitment and contributions.. This loss will be felt by the entire department and community.
