Today marks International Overdose Awareness day as it’s 25th year in recognition. This day, and entire month, honors the lives who have been lost to overdose, and prevention efforts to promote recovery. Let us use this day as a chance to educate ourselves and promote understanding to de-stigmatize substance abuse, so that those struggling can get the support they deserve. Remember, overdose is preventable 💜

Here are 5 things to look out for if you suspect someone is experiencing an opioid overdose, and what to do in the event of an emergency. Remember, it is safe to administer Naloxone even if you are unsure if the overdose is opioid-related. Call 911 and stay by their side, ensuring they are breathing properly while help arrives.

Did you know Virginia saw a 23% decrease in drug overdose deaths in 2025? While this is encouraging progress, we still have a lot of work to do. Continued prevention efforts through education and expanding the knowledge of community resources available to you is important to making a difference.

Thank you Cailey for sharing your story with Hanover Cares! Any prescribed medication can be dangerous, and enticing, to children. That's why it is important to securely store medication and dispose of all unused medication. The Hanover County Community Services Board, the Hanover Health Department, and the Hanover Opioid Task Force offer free resources to try to prevent emergencies. We are glad that Cailey is safe and well, and hopeful to expand the usage of medication lockboxes to try to prevent accidents like these in the future.

It was great to have attended the HCPS neighborhood events this year! Our final tabling was at Elmont Elementary, and we enjoyed passing out our resources and merchandise to all of the Hanover students who came out. Being able to impact the Hanover County youth is a large part of the Hanover Cares mission, so we were grateful to be included in such a meaningful experience. Thanks to all who attended the events, and thank you to all who planned them!
