With another winter storm approaching tonight, it is important to remember a few cold weather tips to help keep our animals safe:

1. Keep in mind with the high levels of snowfall we have had, dogs can easily jump fencing - it is safest to leash walk. It is also important to remember that dogs cannot easily find their way home during a snow storm as any scent trail is lost during a storm. Even dogs who normally do not stray far from home can become lost in this depth of snow.

2. Bring outdoor animals inside. When the temperature drops and windchill worsens, animals are not able to conserve heat as well. If outdoor pets cannot be brought inside, please ensure that they have adequate and appropriate shelter, in addition to access to fresh water and food. Food consumption in animals helps to increase heat output.

3. If you have any questions or concerns, please call your local Animal Control Officer.

Happy to report another happy reunion this morning due to micro-chipping! (The pup had broke loose from both collar and leash - and thus had no form of ID present.) Micro-chipping your pet is a permanent form of identification that is good for the life of your animal. It can be done for dogs and cats (as well as various livestock animals.) Check with your local veterinarian and Animal Shelter - some perform yearly micro-chipping clinics for a low fee. ($20.00-$30.00)

We are glad to see Murphy is safe! Please be extra cautious when out walking dogs during the winter - we may know it's not safe to walk out on the ice, but they don't!

At approximately 3:01 pm today, the Ashland Police Department received a call about a dog that had fallen through the ice at the reservoir in the Ashland State Park . Officers Alberini, Jewett, Fay and Girotti arrived to find the dog, Murphy, struggling in the water and its owner laying on very thin ice frantically trying to rescue it. After removing the owner from the ice, Officer Alberini used a throw rope and tossed it out to Murphy. After a few attempts, Murphy took hold of the rope by biting it, allowing the officers to pull him to safety and reuniting him with his owner. Pictured here is Officer Alberini with Murphy and his very grateful owner. Great work by our officers! This incident also serves to highlight the extreme dangers of icy lakes and ponds this time of year.
