The Ashland Fire Department will be conducting annual fire hydrant testing throughout the city over the coming weeks. Each day, fire apparatus will be assigned to different areas of the city, and the locations being tested will change daily as crews work through the hydrant system.
Hydrant testing is an important part of ensuring our community's fire protection system is ready when needed. During testing, firefighters verify that hydrants are operating properly, measure water flow and pressure, and identify hydrants that may require maintenance or repairs. This process helps ensure reliable water supplies for emergency incidents and allows us to address problems before they impact service.
Residents may notice temporary discoloration of their water during or shortly after hydrant testing in their area. This discoloration is typically caused by the increased water flow stirring up naturally occurring mineral and sediment deposits that accumulate inside water mains over time. While the water may appear rusty or cloudy, it is generally not harmful.
If you experience discolored water:
💧 Run cold water from a faucet or bathtub for several minutes.
💧 The water should clear as fresh water moves through the system.
💧 Avoid washing light-colored clothing until the water is clear.
We understand this can be an inconvenience and will work as quickly as possible to complete testing and move out of each area.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to maintain a safe and reliable fire protection system for the City of Ashland.
