We have received notification from DPH that mosquito samples from Ashland continue to test positive for West Nile Virus.

West Nile Virus is a mosquito borne illness which the DPH tests for every summer. Surveillance has indicated that infected mosquitoes have been detected in the area and residents should take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites. By taking simple precautions and reducing mosquito breeding areas around your home, everyone can help lower the risk of mosquito-borne illness in our community.

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause illness ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to, in rare cases, serious neurological disease such as encephalitis (swelling of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord). These symptoms require immediate medical attention.

The virus is spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. It is not spread through casual person-to-person contact or by touching infected birds or animals.

Symptoms typically appear 2 - 6 days after the bite of an infected mosquito but can develop up to 30 days later, especially in people with weakened immune systems. Adults over age 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe illness.

There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for West Nile Virus. Most people recover with rest, fluids, and supportive care. Anyone experiencing symptoms of severe illness should seek immediate medical attention.

The best way to prevent WNV is to avoid mosquito bites.
- Use insect repellents any time you are outdoors
- Wear long-sleeved clothing
- Schedule outdoor activities to avoid the hours from dusk to dawn
- Repair damaged screens
- Remove standing water

The Central Mass Mosquito Control Project will be commencing mosquito spraying service for the Ashland community in the affected area.
For more information contact the Ashland Department of Public Health, 508-532-7922.

Information about WNV and reports of current and historical WNV virus activity in Massachusetts can be found on the MDPH website at: www.mass.gov/dph/mosquito or Central Mass. Mosquito Control at: www.cmmcp.org

A huge shout out to the Jangi family for the donation of a bench at Stone park in honor of Dr. Rohit Jangi. Dr. Jangi was a resident of Ashland for 38 years, a practicing physician in town, a devoted father, husband, was a very lighthearted person with a sparkling sense of humor, and a great zest for life.

He loved the people of Ashland & mingled with the community during various town events such as Ashland Day activities, summer concerts at the park, the parades in town, Christmas activities, Temple activities, and many such town happenings.

He particularly loved fishing & canoeing at the Ashland reservoir. Being a strong family man, he even had his visiting parents & in-laws from India enjoy this town immensely.

He believed in giving back to the community in various ways through his profession and affiliations with Bethany HealthCare, MetroWest Medical Center and socially through friends, neighbors etc. He will be missed by all. Thank you to the Jangi family for this gift, they invite you to sit, relax, and enjoy your day at the Ashland Stone Park.
