Back to school and ready to learn! 🎒📚

Last month, HACA hosted Back 2 School events across our communities, helping students stock up and get ready for the year ahead. A big thank you to Baby2Baby and United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County for donating school supplies, and to the Asheville Police Department for helping us distribute them to students and families!

Building safer, stronger communities starts with conversation.

Hillcrest Management recently brought residents and members of the Asheville Police Department’s Housing Authority Unit together for a community meeting focused on neighborhood safety. Residents had the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and ideas, and connect directly with the officers serving their community.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and continues to play a role in making Hillcrest a welcoming community to call home!

Eviction can be confusing, especially if you've never been through the process before.

In our latest blog, HACA Operations Manager Alex Ruiz explains what renters who are having trouble making their rent payments should know about the eviction process in North Carolina.

“Understanding the process can take a lot of the guesswork out of what comes next,” he says. “When residents know what to expect, they can make informed decisions.”

Young adults ages 16-24 in Buncombe County can earn a GED, gain hands-on construction experience, and prepare for a career in the trades through YouthBuild CORE-2.

Participants receive education, job training, supportive services, and opportunities to earn financial incentives while helping build affordable housing in Buncombe County. Eligible HACA residents may also be able to satisfy HACA work requirements through the program.

The next orientation is August 17-21, with programming beginning August 31.

After experiencing homelessness and the devastating loss of her son, Parthenia McAuley made a decision to change the course of her life.

Through faith, hard work, and HACA's Family Self-Sufficiency Program, that journey led to an incredible milestone: purchasing her first home.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for HACA's Transitional Career Day!

We were thrilled to welcome 50+ residents who had the opportunity to connect with 14 local employers, workforce organizations, and community partners offering career guidance, training opportunities, and employment resources.

Events like this are about more than finding a job. They're about building relationships, expanding opportunities, and helping residents take meaningful steps toward greater financial stability and long-term success.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to the organizations that generously shared their time, expertise, and opportunities with our community. We wish all of our attendees the very best as they take the next step in their career journeys!

For years, Jessie Mace moved her four children between apartments and single-wide trailers across Western North Carolina, searching for a safe, affordable place to call home. In April, with support from HACA and Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, she closed on a newly constructed four-bedroom home in Arden.

“Life feels settled,” she says.
