Avery Learning Center, Inc. (CWA) is an educational nonprofit organization. CWA strives to enhance the state of marginalized communities by equipping, empowering, and energizing the next generation of socially conscious leaders. We obtain our vision by providing academic, social, cultural, spiritual, and civic development to disadvantaged families in Western North Carolina through afterschool and

summer programming. It is our aim to be the model organization that aids in family-life development. CWA is named after the late Mrs. Christine Watson Avery. Christine Avery served the Asheville community for over 50 years as an elementary and special education school teacher in Asheville City School, a pastor’s wife, and as the Christian Education Director at the Hill Street Baptist Church. She is one of the founders of the Hill Street Daycare Center, Asheville’s oldest and only Black-owned daycare facility still in operation. Christine Avery believed that every person was special in their own way and deserving of love and care. Her message to everyone was to say and believe that, “I Am Lovable And Capable.”

As an activist and educator, Christine Avery served alongside her husband, the late Rev. Dr. Nilous M. Avery, Sr., to champion discrimination in educational and employment practices. Dr. and Mrs. Avery were successful in integrating Asheville City School Systems and the local Winn Dixie, developing the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Asheville, as well as creating the Asheville Student Commission on Racial Equality (ASCORE). Committed to the community and the youth, Christine Avery dedicated her life to serving others. CWA was founded to continue their legacy by supporting and uplifting the Black community of Asheville North Carolina through educational enrichment and family-life development. CWA specializes in providing innovative programming that addresses the academic, social, cultural, spiritual, and civic development for youth ages 2 – 16 years old. We incorporate innovation by incorporating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) enrichment in our programming. We challenge and address social issues by incorporating the youth’s family, culture, and community into their development and learning.

🦋✨ A Magical Moment at CWA-Valley! ✨🦋

Our little geniuses at CWA-Valley recently had the opportunity to release butterflies after spending weeks observing their incredible life cycle! 🌿🐛➡️🦋

Our preschoolers LOVED watching the caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies and learning firsthand about growth, change, and the wonders of nature. Through hands-on experiences like these, our young geniuses are building curiosity, critical thinking skills, and a lifelong love of learning. 💙

There were lots of smiles, excitement, and butterfly wishes as they watched their new winged friends take flight! 🌞🦋

At CWA, we believe some of the best learning happens when children can see, touch, explore, and experience the world around them.

🇺🇸❤️ Today, we honor and remember the brave servicemen and women who gave their lives in defense of our country. Memorial Day is a time of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. 🕊️

The origins of Memorial Day trace back to the aftermath of the Civil War, when communities across the country began honoring fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers. One of the earliest documented Memorial Day commemorations was organized by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865. After the war, Black residents helped properly bury Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp and later gathered to honor them with a parade, prayers, songs, and flowers a powerful act of remembrance, freedom, and gratitude. ❤️🖤💚

What began as “Decoration Day” eventually became Memorial Day, a national observance honoring all military personnel who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. 🇺🇸

At the Christine W. Avery Learning Center, we remember the sacrifices of those who served and honor the legacy of courage, service, and freedom they left behind.

Wishing our CWA families and community a safe and meaningful Memorial Day. ❤️🤍💙

🏛️✨ Advocacy in action! ✨🏛️

This week, our Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. CiCi Weston, and Chief Operations Officer, Ms. Kyla Morton, traveled to the North Carolina State Capitol to advocate for Early Learning and the importance of raising subsidy floor rates for childcare providers across our state. 📚💛

Their advocacy represents the voices of children, families, educators, and communities who rely on access to high-quality early childhood education every day. Investing in Early Learning means investing in stronger futures, stronger families, and stronger communities. 🌟

At CWA, we remain committed to ensuring our children and families receive the support, resources, and opportunities they deserve, because the work we do matters “from the womb to the workforce.” ❤️💙💛

🥕🍎 Be sure to ask your young genius about CWA’s Farmers Market at our Gaston St. site every Wednesday! 🌽🍓

Each week, our students and families will have the opportunity to receive a wonderful variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to support healthy eating and wellness at home. 💚

At CWA, we believe learning and growth happen both inside and outside of the classroom and access to fresh foods helps our geniuses thrive! 🌱✨

📚✨ Early literacy matters! ✨📚

Introduction to literacy in early learning programs helps build the foundation for language, communication, imagination, comprehension, and a lifelong love of learning. From listening to stories and recognizing letters to developing vocabulary and social-emotional connections, these early experiences help prepare our little learners for future academic success. 💛📖

Today, our students had a special visit from Books Alive with Ms. Ann, who came to read, engage, and bring stories to life for our geniuses! 🎉📚 Thank you, Ms. Ann, for pouring into our students and helping make literacy fun, interactive, and meaningful.

At CWA, we believe every story read is another step toward empowering the next generation of leaders. 🌟
