Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865—the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, liberation, and the work of building a more inclusive future for all.

We invite everyone to participate, learn, celebrate, and honor this important chapter of American history.

Installation of a playable, musical sculpture will occur on the Reed Creek Greenway near the corner of Catawba Street in summer of 2026 🎨🎵

As part of Asheville's One Percent for Public Art Policy, one percent of funds for the LEED certified Broadway Public Safety Station went towards the creation of a new piece of public art. After putting out a call for artists, the City of Asheville commissioned Nick Geurts and Alex Irvine to design the art installation. The community provided feedback to determine that the piece would be a playable music sculpture.

This interactive public art piece will feature ceramic tiles made by members of the community.

Stay tuned for the unveiling of this exciting new public art installation!

🏠 Asheville City Council has approved $9.5 million in federal disaster recovery funding to support the Terrace at River Hills affordable housing development.

The project will add 126 affordable rental housing units for households earning 20–80% of Area Median Income and includes a minimum 35-year affordability commitment. The project must receive Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) approval from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) before construction can begin.

This investment is part of the City’s Community Development Block Grant–Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program and supports Asheville’s long-term recovery from Tropical Storm Helene.

Combined with two affordable housing developments approved in May, the City has now committed more than $17.8 million in federal CDBG-DR funding to support 331 affordable rental housing units across Asheville.
