Oakley Elementary School PTO Oakley School, in partnership with our community, embraces our diverse population and is dedicated to creating successful, lifelong learners.

We are located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Our school has been recognized as a School of Distinction. The Oakley Community has a diversified population. Our diversity has grown in recent years as more students from Eastern European countries and Spanish speaking countries have moved into our community. As a staff, we frequently examine our instructional programs and practices. We c

ontinually seek to provide the educational opportunities that best meet the needs of all of our students in a safe environment. In 1995, our 1925 school building was remodeled and a new two-story structure was constructed with extensive landscaping that enhances the grounds and the Oakley community. Our school houses K-5 classrooms, a special education wing, a gymnatorium, a media center and administrative offices. We have over 80 staff members encompassing K-5 teachers, instructional assistants, a full-time school counselor, 2 full-time English as Second Language teachers, music, art, physical education and media teachers, a family-school specialist, a DSS intervention worker, a part-time nurse, a speech-language therapist, a technology associate, a computer lab assistant,a part-time school psychologist, a part-time occupational therapist and a part-time academically gifted teacher. Our daily membership averages 480 students. These students are instructed in classrooms ranging in size from 15-26. Approximately 17% of our students are served by our English as Second Language teachers. Our population demographics consist of the following composition: 56% Caucasion (includes 20% Eastern Europeans), 24% African-American, 9% Multi-racial, 10% Hispanic, .5% Asian and .5% Native American. We are proud of the many programs and educational opportunities that we offer our students. For the past several years, we have provided faculty-sponsored clubs to our students. From quilting to clogging our students enjoy many club activities. Our clogging team was the first one in the county and has won many awards. We are fortunate to have the Foster Grandparent Program facilitated in our school. A primary goal over the past several years has been to facilitate our home-school-community partnership. Our core of community volunteers includes: parents, grandparents, community churches, local businesses, and the teacher cadets from our district high school. These volunteers tutor, assist in classrooms, organize and work at fall festivals, science fairs, and landscaping projects. Big Brothers/BigSisters of America partner with us in our schoolwide mentoring program that provides a one-on-one connection for our students. At Oakley Elementary we continually reflect on our practices, striving to give our students the tools and attitudes to become lifelong learners and productive citizens.

Our social worker is having an End of Year Food Drive for families in need. If you would like to drop off non perishable food you can do so through this Friday at the school in the entryway before 2:30. You may also drop off on May 26 between 2:00-5:00 and May 27 between 8:00-1:00 at Fellowship Asheville. The goal is to provide 50 families extra food to help during this difficult time.
