Congratulations to this week’s Students of the Week: Isabelle, Jameson, and Eqypt!

These three outstanding leaders received Positive Office Referrals for demonstrating our core Habits of Character: Accountability, Collaboration, Engagement, Respect, and Revision. Whether stepping up in the classroom, supporting their peers, or strengthening our school community, they lead by example every day.

Thank you for showing us what it means to be part of a strong, kind, and welcoming AMS!

Officer Jason Gall spent time with all of Ms. Muir’s classes last week where he told 6th graders about his life leading up to becoming a police officer and his role in our school community as our SRO (school resource officer) before taking students’ questions. What an amazing resource Officer Gall is, indeed!

Ask most people if you can take 150-plus sixth graders and have them playing full songs by week two, and they’ll tell you you're dreaming. But our AMS band directors don't see limits, they just see potential.

Heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Bulluck and Mrs. Robinett for dedicating their after-school hours to give these kids a flying start. Huge praise goes to our sixth graders for taking on the challenge, our talented high school mentors for stepping up to guide them, and our wonderful parents for supporting their musical ambitions from day one. We couldn't be prouder of this team!

👏🏻Welcome Mr. McKeown to the Cougar Family👏🏻

We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Brian McKeown as our 7th-grade Social Studies teacher for the 2026–2027 school year.

Mr. McKeown is dedicated to creating an inviting classroom environment paired with high academic standards. In his class, history comes alive through dynamic discussions and real-world connections that resonate with students today. He aims to make learning memorable, challenging, and engaging while helping students build lasting friendships along the way.

We are delighted to have him on our team. Please join us in giving Mr. McKeown a warm Cougar welcome!

Here are a few words from Mr. McKeown.........
I have lived in Asheville since graduating from Loyola University of Chicago in January of 2000. I always knew I wanted to help young people unlock their potential. At first I worked with at risk youth at the Juvenile Evaluation Center in Swannanoa and then at a Wilderness Therapy Program. I then found myself working in teen programs for the YMCA, which brought me to the classroom and I discovered that teaching was my true calling. I returned to school at Western Carolina to receive a History and Education degree in 2013. After graduating I began teaching at Erwin High School in the History department where I taught every subject from World History to AP US History. I am so excited to be joining the Asheville Middle crew and excited to share my passion for Social Studies with my students!

BIG news for Asheville Middle School!

The 2025–2026 NCDPI data is officially in, and our Cougar students and staff achieved our highest overall School Performance Grade score in a decade!

Here are the big wins:
-Highest Score in 10 Years: Up 12 points year-over-year to a 67 overall performance score!
-Exceeded Expected Growth: Rebounded massively with an overall EVAAS Growth Score of +5.95! (State standards define "Exceeded" at +2.00, placing us far above the threshold!)
-Subject Gains: Math performance jumped 11 points (Exceeded Growth), Reading proficiency hit 62.6% (Met Growth), and Science saw a +10.1 point proficiency boost (Exceeded Growth)!
-Growth Across the Board: Every single measured group of students met or exceeded expected growth last year, leading the way with strong academic momentum.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers, hardworking students, and supportive families for making this milestone year possible. While we know there is still plenty of room to grow and continuous progress to be made, we are incredibly proud of this momentum and can't wait to keep building on it together!
