‼️ Asheboro Police Department and other agencies have seen an increase in Fraud Calls and Scams. Fraud Calls are deceptive communications where scammers use number spoofing and AI voice manipulation to impersonate trusted entities—like government agencies, banks, or family members—to steal your money or personal data.
Legitimate law enforcement will never ask you to pay to get yourself or someone else out of trouble. We will never direct you drive to a local store to purchase any type of pre-paid cards and then have you give us the digital codes. When in doubt, call us directly at 336-626-1300.
Common Scams
Imposter Scams: Scammers pretend to be from the IRS, Social Security, or a bank, warning you about "suspicious activity" or demanding payment.
Family Emergency: AI deepfake voices are used to impersonate a grandchild or loved one claiming they are in danger or need immediate bail money.
Jury Duty or Warrant: Callers claim you missed a court appearance and must pay a fee or fine to avoid arrest.
Warning Signs
High-Pressure Tactics: The caller demands immediate payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.
Threats: They threaten you with lawsuits, arrest, or the cancellation of your Social Security or Medicaid cards.
Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers: Unsolicited calls offering quick loans, grants, or low-interest rates.
How to Protect Yourself
Hang Up Immediately: Do not engage, and never confirm any personal information.
Verify Independently: If you are worried, call the organization or family member directly using a verified, publicly listed number—not the one that called you.
Use Carrier Tools: Activate built-in call screening or download third-party spam-blocking applications (like Nomorobo, Hiya, or Robokiller).
Do Not Call Registry: Register your phone numbers on the Do Not Call Registry to limit legitimate telemarketing calls.
