Democratic Socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few. We are a political and activist organization, not a party; through campus and community-based chapters DSA members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people

Here in Metro DC DSA, our wor

k, thought and action often get expressed through our committees: antiracism, socialist feminist, economic justice, communication, rapid response, outreach and member development.

The DC primary is just weeks away — and one race that’s been largely ignored until now has the power to change everything! The DC Democratic Party State Committee has 48 seats up for grabs, which is even more exciting when you realize that they’re the ones with the power to appoint interim at-large council members when they’re a vacancy. The slate you want to be paying attention to is the : they’re the insurgent progressive faction, they’re aligned with Janeese Lewis George, and they’re on a ballot in your possession!

Also heating up are the incoming summer surge flooding the streets of DC thanks to the Safe and Beautiful Task Force, with agents pointing a gun after a resident spoke out against the arrest of someone for drinking beer outside. Endorsed candidates Aparna Raj and Janeese Lewis George both spoke out against this act of violence and intimidation — and is continuing to do the work every single day to keep our neighbors safe.

And in Takoma Park, the battle for rent stabilization wages on, with tenants planning a canvass tomorrow in preparation for the hearing on June 10.

Need even more ways to plug in? Don’t worry, this edition of the Weekly Update also includes electoral canvassing all weekend long, a FUN happy hour and workers circle, punk rock karaoke, and more.

Every Friday, get the Weekly Update dispatched straight to your email inbox, with action notices, campaign updates, good reads, and more covering the District, Northern Virginia, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County.

Metro DC DSA condemns the abduction of hundreds of members of the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza, including our own community members Haitham Arafat of DC and Abel Bisrat of Silver Spring. These humanitarians were detained after Israeli forces stormed an aid flotilla in international waters while they were attempting to bring desperately needed aid to Gaza and challenge the siege.

Haitham, Abel, and their fellow flotilla members represent the best of our community—people willing to put their bodies on the line in solidarity with Palestinians facing unimaginable suffering.

Call your representatives now. Demand an arms embargo on Israel, unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza, and sanctions on Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and end to U.S. complicity in genocide.

What a day.

More than 100 people came out for a massive DSA, labor, and immigrant justice canvass for Janeese in Chevy Chase, with volunteers and partner organizations helping knock more than 5,000 doors across Wards 1, 3, and 4.

This was our biggest weekend yet, and the momentum is only growing.

People are excited, the field operation is getting stronger every week, and we’re building the kind of campaign it takes to win.

Come knock with us! 💜
