Heavy rainfall and pockets of flash flooding are possible today, particularly over our counties in Southwest Georgia, Southeast Alabama and Florida counties along the State Line. These areas are under a Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall (Level 2 of 4) today. Nearly all of our remaining Florida counties are under a Marginal Risk of Excessive Rainfall (Level 1 of 4).

Overview:

Heavy rain is forecast today. Today will be the most convectively active day of the forecast period with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms expected. Widespread rainfall amounts range from about a half inch to 1.5 inches (isolated higher). However, local high-resolution models suggest a 12-hr worst case scenario of 3-4+ inches this afternoon and about 2-5+ inches during the evening mainly north of the FL state line (isolated 6-8 inches appears possible). The probability of 3 inches ranges from about 25-50% - highest around the I-75 corridor and Wiregrass Region. The High-Resolution Ensemble Forecast (HREF) paints high probabilities for greater than 3 inches in SE AL, SW GA, and parts of the Eastern FL Big Bend with lower end probabilities of exceeding 5 inches. This information suggests a fairly high ceiling for heavy rain. Current flash flood guidance shows that about 2-2.5 inches in 1 hr and/or 3-4 inches in 3 hrs would be needed to produce flash flooding.

Flood Watch Issued

A Flood Watch has been issued for much of the Florida Panhandle, southeast Alabama, and portions of southwest Georgia for today through late tonight.

Why the Flood Risk is Elevated:

Saturated Ground: Heavy rainfall over the last 72 hours has left portions of the region vulnerable to flooding.
4 to 7 inches of rain have already fallen across the Panhandle, Apalachicola River Basin, and southeast Alabama. 2 to 4 inches of rain have fallen across extreme southwest Georgia. (see graphic below or attached).
Incoming Storms: Deep tropical moisture will move into the area today from the south. There is high confidence in widespread storms producing heavy rainfall rates. Additionally, there is a increased risk of training storms today, which could lead to flooding quickly developing.
Rainfall Forecast & Timing:

Widespread Totals: 1 to 3 inches expected across most of the watch area.
Localized Totals: 4 to 6 inches, with a 10% chance of isolated areas receiving up to 8 inches.
Timing: The heaviest rain will fall from late this morning into the afternoon and evening. Flooding threats may persist into the early overnight hours depending on how the storms evolve today.

05/24/2026

Isolated strong-severe storms are possible this morning into the afternoon as a loosely-organized complex of storms moves in from the west.

Additional Details: While the overall severe weather forecast remains a bit uncertain today, a lingering storm complex moving in from the Gulf will track inland across the western Florida Panhandle near daybreak and move northeastward throughout the day. As this loosely-organized complex moves across the tri-state area into the morning and afternoon, this complex of storms could grow as additional storms develop. Although widespread severe weather is not expected, these storms could pose an increasing threat for isolated damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, along with the possibility of small hail, this morning and into the afternoon hours.

Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon across much of Southwest Georgia. A marginal risk, or level 1 of 5, for severe storms is in place for much of Southwest Georgia. Damaging winds and hail are the main hazards.

Overview:
After morning cloud cover dissipates and temperatures warm this afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop across South Georgia. A few of these storms could become severe, producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch in diameter. These storms will weaken shortly after sunset and dissipate around midnight.

A graphic outlining the risk area is attached.
