👑 Crown & Character: Building Young Men of Purpose 👑

Turner County Schools is proud to highlight the outstanding leadership of Turner County Middle School Assistant Principal, Willie Edwards, and the meaningful work accomplished this year through the Crown & Character Club.

This program has provided young men with opportunities to grow in leadership, responsibility, and character through a wide range of engaging activities and life lessons. Throughout the year, students participated in etiquette training, meal preparation, financial literacy lessons, conflict resolution, and discussions centered around the ‘Leader in Me 7 Habits’.

Students also experienced Generational Wisdom Day, where community elders shared valuable stories and life lessons, explored creativity through art projects, African drumming, spoken word, and holiday card writing, and participated in sports-based leadership activities focused on teamwork, stress management, and making positive choices under pressure.

This spring, club members expanded their horizons through entrepreneurship workshops with local business leaders, mock interviews, and participation in the high school job fair. The year concluded with impactful learning experiences on the dangers of va**ng and drug abuse, an awards and honors program, and an end-of-year breakfast to celebrate growth and achievement.

Mr. Edwards created something special through Crown & Character - helping shape young men into future leaders by investing in their character, confidence, and purpose. We are grateful for his dedication and proud of the positive impact this club continues to make in Turner County Schools.

🎉 Turner County Schools’ Recognitions and Attendance at the 2026 GSBA Summer Conference 🎉

This week, members of the Turner County Board of Education and Superintendent Christy Wray joined school leaders from across Georgia at the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) Summer Conference, celebrating 75 years of leadership, advocacy, and service to public education. This year’s conference theme, “75 Years Forward: Governing with Vision, Leading with Purpose,” focused on equipping board members and superintendents with the tools and knowledge needed to continue moving public education forward.

Throughout the conference, attendees participated in impactful keynote sessions and breakout learning opportunities centered on some of the most important issues facing schools today - including artificial intelligence in education, literacy initiatives, legislative updates, school finance and budget management, board governance, policy development, and student achievement strategies. These sessions provided valuable insight to help strengthen leadership and support continued growth in Turner County Schools.

We are especially proud to congratulate Turner County Board of Education Chairman, Cornelius Ball, on officially receiving the gavel and beginning his service as GSBA President for the coming year. This is an incredible honor and a testament to his dedication to public education.

Additionally, Superintendent Wray was honored to accept an Academic Achievement Banner on behalf of Turner County Schools, recognizing Turner County Middle School’s successful exit from the Comprehensive Support & Improvement (CSI) list this year. This accomplishment reflects the hard work, commitment, and perseverance of our students, teachers, leaders, and staff.

Turner County Schools remains committed to learning, growing, and leading with purpose as we continue building a stronger future for our students and community.

🎶 A Historic Year for the Titans of Sound: Celebrating Excellence, Growth, and New Instruments for the Future! 🎶

Turner County Schools is proud to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our Titans of Sound Band Program and Band Director, Mr. DeMarcus Cushion, for an incredible 2025-2026 school year! Through hard work, dedication, and a passion for music, our student musicians have represented Turner County with pride both in our schools and throughout the community.

This year, the program:
🎵 Grew to 75 marching band members
🎵 Performed more than 25 times throughout the school and community
🎵 Represented Turner County in the MLK Parade in Ben Hill County
🎵 Performed at a Gospel Awards Program where a student earned scholarship funds
🎵 Participated in Albany State University's Band Day alongside more than 400 student musicians
🎵 Celebrated two seniors earning band and academic scholarships to continue their music education at the collegiate level
🎵 Successfully launched the Titans of Sound Band Booster Club, increasing parent involvement and support
🎵 Raised nearly $15,000 through fundraising and concessions to support band operations and student opportunities

Our concert and beginning band programs also continued to thrive, serving students across grades 6-12 and showcasing their talents during the End-of-Year Band Concert. With 26 new members already preparing to join the marching band this fall, the future of the Titans of Sound is brighter than ever.

🎺🎷 Investing in the Future of Music Education 🎷🎺

In March, the Superintendent recommended and the Turner County Board of Education approved the purchase of $131,945 in new band instruments through the Georgia Department of Education's Economically Disadvantaged Grant. This month, those instruments arrived, marking a historic investment in our band program and student musicians.

The new inventory includes:
🎵 9 Flutes
🎵 6 Clarinets
🎵 6 Saxophones
🎵 6 French Horns
🎵 7 Trombones
🎵 6 Euphoniums
🎵 6 Marching Baritones
🎵 6 Concert Tubas
🎵 6 Sousaphones

The photos of Mr. Cushion surrounded by boxes of brand-new instruments represent far more than new equipment - it represents opportunity, growth, and a commitment to ensuring our students have access to high-quality musical experiences for years to come.

📚✨ Investing in Excellence Through Professional Learning! ✨📚

Turner County Schools is proud to have High School Instructional Coach Latrina Paige and Curriculum Director Darcy Rainey representing our district at the Middle Georgia RESA Instructional Coaches Conference in Jekyll Island, Georgia this week.

Throughout the conference, they engaged in high-quality professional learning focused on strengthening instructional coaching practices, building leadership capacity, and exploring innovative strategies to support teacher growth and student achievement. They also had the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized educational leaders, including Jim Knight, Joellen Killion, and Julie Steele.

Conference sessions highlighted topics such as:
✅ Using data to increase instructional impact
✅ Supporting sustainable teacher growth
✅ Strengthening coaching conversations
✅ Building collaborative school cultures
✅ Ensuring coaching efforts lead to meaningful improvements in teaching and learning

We are excited for Ms. Paige and Ms. Rainey to bring back new ideas, resources, and best practices that will continue to strengthen teaching and learning across our district. Thank you both for your dedication to continuous improvement and your commitment to supporting the success of our teachers, students, and schools. 💙

📊✨ Turner County Schools' District Data Review - Planning for the Future with Our Stakeholders ✨📊

On May 28th Turner County Schools held its annual District Data Review Day and Stakeholder Engagement/Title I Meeting, bringing together district and school leaders to analyze student achievement, attendance, behavior, school climate, survey results, and school improvement priorities. While we recognize there is still work to do, we are encouraged by the meaningful progress our students, teachers, and school leaders achieved this year.

📈 Academic Growth Highlights:
✅ Turner County Elementary School showed gains in:
• 3rd Grade Math (+7.5%)
• 4th Grade Math (+8%)
• 5th Grade Science (+34%)

✅ Turner County Middle School showed gains in:
• 7th Grade Math (+2%)
• 8th Grade Social Studies (+20.5%)

✅ Turner County High School showed gains in:
• Biology (+20%)
• U.S. History (+35%)

Based on current projections, Content Mastery scores are expected to increase by an additional:
📚 TCES: +6%
📚 TCMS: +7%
📚 TCHS: +10%
These gains are expected to positively impact the district's overall CCRPI performance for 2026.

💙 Our stakeholders also shared encouraging feedback:
• Parents reported positive school climate ratings and identified text messaging as a preferred method of communication.
• 80% of teachers reported strong leadership and peer support.
• 86% of students indicated that adults at school care about them.

During the meeting, teams conducted root cause analysis, reviewed subgroup performance and student achievement data, identified areas for improvement, and developed SMART goals and action plans for the 2026-2027 school year.

🎯 Key priorities moving forward include:
• Strengthening relationships with families
• Improving communication and engagement
• Supporting student attendance and achievement
• Empowering parents as instructional partners
• Maintaining a strong focus on literacy, math growth, and student success

We are proud of the progress being made across Turner County Schools and remain committed to continuous improvement. The work is never finished, but our students are growing, our staff is dedicated, and our future is bright.
